Common problem?

does anyone know what kind of fan i should get for the Mesa M9 Carbine? I know the fan is in the back but not sure if it blows out or in and I have no cab to test it and dont want to turn the head on with no load

There are a few other things to also think about. I'd be a bit concerned that this is not the first amp that's had the same problem with this rig. To me that suggests that you should check the impedance of the cabinets that you're playing with. I don't mean just look at the back and confirm that you're running with an impedance that matches the specs of the amp, but actually get the cabinets measured. There could be a speaker problem that's making your amp see a lower load than it should and causing this problem

Otherwise, when it comes to fans, there are a few different things. There are some nice rack mount fans that if you do a quick google search you can come up with. I used to use a small 8" clip on fan on the back of my cabinet. It cost under ten bucks and is still kickin' about 4 years after I got rid of my Mesa amp.

Also, if you can give your amp at least one rack space of empty air above the amp, you may also be clear of an overheating problem.

It's perfectly safe to turn a SS head on without a load. Only Tube amps care.

The M9 has 1 12ax7 in the preamp, right?

And this is a totally different rig that the last one that did the same thing. I am just using a Schecter bass into the M9 into an Ampeg 8x10, now a Mesa Powerhouse 1000

Only tube OUTPUT amps ie. 6L6, 6ca7/EL34, KT66/77/88/90/100, 6550, EL84/6BQ5 must have a load attached. Preamp tubes 12AX7/7025, 12AT7/12AU7 ect are not output tubes.
