comparing three fender precisions...

I have played P basses in stores etc off and on for the last 30 years. Never had one speak to me enough to buy - until my MIM classic 50's maple. That bass has some kind of something, mojo or whatever you want to call that I can't let go of, and has kept me from playing my Sadowsky since I bought it earlier this summer - love that neck too. Great bass and agreed, they all have different personalities.

I own a 2012 American standard P bass with TI flats. my desert island bass.

ran into a nice 63AVRI P bass locally and have went and played it a few times seriously thinking about acquiring it. I was digging the thicker neck and vintage frets a lot. sounded good too; different than my standard.

at the store today, they also had a new American standard and a new professional series P bass along with the AVRI.
I played all three and surprisingly, the standard was better to my ears; it had the right gankiness that I love and was more classic P than the other two- at least to my taste

I was hoping the professional would be better but it seemed slightly more modern in tone. neckwise, I could feel no difference although they said there was one.

nice to know that the bass I have at home is the same as the one I played in the store.

I kinda lost my fervor for the AVRI after that which is good lol.

but they are blowing these standard P's out cheap though...

moral to the story is that not all P's are alike and have a fair amount of variation.
Standard USA P's for cheap? Where? :woot:

I was trying out usa P & J basses unplugged and in both cases I liked the feel of the standards better. And I was biased to the opposite, I was excited about the elites, but that changed my mind.

its funny because I was seriously considering spec'ing out a G&L LB-100 and make a kind of 63 fender AVRI replica (sonic blue/RW/mint PG and neck dimensions.) I figured I could custom build one cheaper than the used price they were asking. after trying out the AVRI a few times, I decided that the 1 3/4 nut is too chunky for me. having never personally tried an LB-100, I have no guarantee it would sound as 'fenderish' as I want.

there is some merit to having an actual fender P I am realizing and that's OK. if you search you can find really good ones; I already own a good one with TI flats on it.

I own a '15 Am. Std. and a '13 MIM - both Precisions, both with TI flats, and of course, both with Tortloaf.

The MIM is a very great improvement over the '95 MIM Jazz and '04 MIM P that I have had in construction and sound and feel. HOWEVER, to my ears, its stock pickup, though very loud and aggressive, sounded brittle and over hyped in the treble region - to me, a cheap sound. I had a Nordy NP4 I put in - I still prefer the CS pup, but I can enjoy the MIM now.

As to feel, they supposedly have the same neck profile (my P's), but the MIM feels thinner and IS more susceptible to movement and still likes to be loved on to keep the relief where I like it, even with the TI's tension.

The U.S. feels better in the neck, and though for me movement of the neck happens with it as well, it is far less often and the neck feels much more substantial. I love the CS pup, too.

Is all of this because I paid more by $700 for the US P so I can't see its flaws? Naturally, I hope not. But I will admit that they are more similar than not when compared to previous models. However, my bond with my Am. Std. is far stronger based on sound, and then feel.
a man/woman after my own heart. i have a '13 am std rosewood w/ labella flats i like a lot, currently looking for another am std maple for rounds. i think i'll live with that combo for a long time.
