compliments on a cheap bass?

Are you using tapewounds on that? If so, which ones and how do you like them?

No -- those are DR Black Beauties which are coated roundwounds. I have used tapes in the past and I like them quite a bit.

Specifically, I have used:

LaBella Black Nylon Tapewounds (BNT's): Nice round, woody sound. They are standard on Barker Basses. They play nice and smooth.

Fender Tapewounds: Nice but a bit brighter than the LaBellas. They also have higher tension than the LaBellas.

Thanks for the info. I am currently testing out the Rotosound 88s. I don't know why I didn't try the LaBellas, they are actually my favorite flats.

I absolutely love the sound of the tapewounds. But I feel I am not cutting through as well. So I may switch back to flats.

I have just started doing some informal shedding with a local bass player that I met at a music shop. This cat is BAD ... chops/tone & groove up the ying yang. Pretty well known/respected on the local music scene and has gigged all over the country. He's been playing bass for about 25 years.

Before we got started playing, he asked me about my various basses. Picked em up and felt them out a bit. Before I gave him my SX, I simply said ... "I'm not going to say a word about this bass. Just play it for awhile."

He picked it up, played it for a while. Looked up and down the neck, nodded approvingly, and played it some more. After that, I said "How much do you think I paid for that?"

He said, "Hmmm -- about 6-700 dollars?"

He was totally blown away when I told him I only paid $120.

In all fairness, my SX has been seriously cosmetically modded and it has been set up extremely well by an outstanding bass tech. Even so, I was pleased!

from what i see, you guys have pretty nice looking but cheap basses. maybe it was physchological (spelling?). i nice looking bass is an expensive bass. and an expensive bass sounds nice.

Hey, I've got a question, how was your GC setup? i'm considering getting my jazz set up nicely, but I dunno.
