Composite Nidacore Fearful 15/6/1 Build

Do you guys know if these will be available empty? I'm thinking very seriously about migrating my woofers and xover into one of these, if it is the case.

That's not a bad idea. Could save you some money doing the assembly yourself too. I'll keep it mind as an option.

This looks fantastic and after having layed up my own fibreglass/foam panels for a 15/6 build, I'm kinda wishing I'd gone this route instead. I've been poking around looking for product info on nidacore panels but haven't yet found any specifics on price. Did you guys source directly from Nidacore? Which panels are you using? 18WLGLAM?

I've laid up many cabinets too and this is a million times more efficient. The price is in favor of the nidacore once you factor labor into it. Keeps you in the 'do mode' and out of the 'holy ****, this project is taking forever mode'

I spoke with nidacore directly about different gelcoats and direct shipping, but they only ship by the pallet and at $200+ a sheet, I'm not in the position to be buy $15k in nidacore yet

It is the 13mm version, which is actually 9/16", so some measurements had to be adjusted. On larger cabs I will be using 1" nidacore for the larger panels. The weight difference is negligible, the price difference is almost negligible, but they are about 5 times stiffer. With them, all these braces will be unnecessary.

Huh...if the price diff on the 1" is almost negligible, and it removes the need for bracing, it might be "a break even" to use the 1" for the smaller cabs as well, in terms of labor saved. This would net you a stronger cab for ~ the same costs, and nearly no weight gain as well, eh?

Please keep us updated on if you do decide to do unloaded enclosures. That would be the route I'd consider. I've done my own outfitting of my fEarful, and always had others do the woodwork. I love the project aspect of doing it, and would definitely consider doing a set of 12/6 for a few other uses.

You and me have been thinking the same thing. It would make the cabinets a bit wider, taller, and deeper, so for something like a 12/6 it might not be a great idea, but for larger cabs it might.

The 1/2" is so stiff, that it might not be noticeable to go thicker anyway.

I think we'll need another guinea pig...:hyper:

Ouch.... Did they hook you up with a sample or did you find a dealer somewhere?

No quibble with the price per sheet, just the entire pallet thing.

They have distributors at pretty much every fiberglass supplier. The salesman at Nidacore was very helpful too and offered to ship my supplier gelcoated pieces at no extra charge just for me.

I first used this about 4 years ago. I was doing a lot of fiberglass car audio installs at the time and somehow a guy who was trying to flip a decommissioned Hooter's 50' ocean racer contacted me and I used the Nidacore to restore some of the interior. I always new I would find a use for it in Pro Audio.

Definitely interested here, as I'm in CT. I checked out the website, but didn't see where the cab maker is located in the state...?

One thing I haven't read here is what the cab is going to be used for. What sound are you going for? What types of music do you play? What amps are you planning on pairing it with? Are you hoping it will be voiced like X companies cabs? Or is the whole point of this just to see how light and low you can go?

Regardless, I'm very interested! I've been thinking of changing out my large rig cabs, but perhaps I'll wait a bit and see where this goes.
Given the bass you have coming the fEaRB 15/6/1 is right up your alley Garrett - it's what I am building for me

We might have a small private viewing when Deb's is complete with you and John. I'm building this is Salem, CT. The shop is at an old dairy farm, right in the middle of the old milking wheel. Pretty cool place. Get in touch with me and we'll find a time to get together.

As a comic, in all seriousness though, these cabs will be plenty strong. This type of construction technique is used to build gliders (although they may not use Nidacore specifically). You might enjoy reading the build threads of Zac's foam/fibreglass composites. The concepts are similar, but Zac doesn't use pre-fab panels. Zac's first build thread is here:

Parts dilemma #2:

My preference is to use the JBL Progressive Transition PT-B99HF-1 waveguide, as recommended on greenboy's fEARful website. But, it seems that JBL usually doesn't get these waveguides out quickly. Does anyone have one of these waveguides for sale or know where one might be available?

Option #2 is the Dayton waveguide, but this horn isn't ideal for me as sometimes I'm playing in close quarters.

All this will be moot, if greenboy finds a miracle 90 x 90 horn ... :)

Great to see another composite build!

The cabs I built (a 2x10 and a pair of 12/6/1s) are about 20lbs each and have been gigging regularly for the last few years without issues.

To all the doubters, don't. This technology is very real. Just pricy. If built correctly this fearful will crush just the same as a plywood cab at a fraction on the weight.

And the vibration/cab moving thing. It doesn't happen.
