Comprehensive Rickenbacker Bass Buying Guide

Yes, a couple of 4002. Still pretty rare, but realize you're looking at a photo of a couple of dozen Rick collectors. (By the way, many are holding others' instruments, not their own!) There were probably close to 100 Rickenbacker instruments there that day. Many of the basses in that shot also appear in the book. It was "confluences" like RIO that help fill my photo library used in the book. I'm in there, Jeff is in there . . . then there is John, Jeff T., Graham, Peter, Todd . . . can't remember all the names now.

What's the story of the model on the far right (stage left), bottom row? The brown burst with the unusual pickup placement...

Not that rare, I guess. Isn’t that another one, top row and fourth from left?
Having two 4002s, and in different finishes, is very much rare even though they were together in the same room. In addition to all the Rick guitars and basses, we had some vintage '60s Fenders, and some other cool instruments, like anl Electric Sitar, an early '60s Gretsch, Rare, Limited edition Larrivée acoustic, and a custom finished Gibson, too, among others. There was more than just my one 4005 bass, also, there.

Here is a sampling of some instruments.

I’ll be a Ric noob tomorrow, as I’ll be taking delivery of a new 4003s in Mapleglo. All the talk about the crappy QC has me concerned. I really hope I don’t get one of the “poo” ones!
I have identical concerns and given the record of dogs I've had shipped to me from American makers, I can only hope. It's like going to Atlantic City each time - you place your bet; you take your chances. Sometimes it's poo, sometimes it's gold.

Hi Bob, I do remember hearing the name, Southpaw, but didn't get out to see too many bands back them, we worked constantly. Nothing famous for me, a couple of bands that I was in are, Jes Plain, Easton, we played at the Agora Ballroom, both stages, and the great SHABOO!, Tom Keegan and language, Chang's, Lupo's, I can't remember anymore fight now but played out a lot in CT, RI, MA, NYC and state, VT, Maine, NH, basically all of New England and NY. I ran two EAW scoop cabs loaded with JBL's for outdoor shows for a while and used a pair of JBL Cabaret series 15's, that I still own.

Cool, we used to play the Shaboo a lot, openers, one I remember is Wishbone Ash. I think we headlined on a New Years eve there once too. Ever play Uncle Sam's Nantasket Beach in Hull? We used to play there a lot too.

Jeff, Is Peter McCormack still active on the Rickenbacker Forum? I haven't seen any posts by him lately during any of my infrequent visits.

Yes, I do remember the name, we also played every club on Masquamicut beach in RI. We played the Shaboo a lot! Easton, the band that I was in was the last band to play there, it burned that night, we almost left our gear there because we were playing there again two nights later. I also helped Skip, rest his soul, with sound, mostly foldback but I did get to pull FOH duty a few times! Small world!

Wow! Skip Weeks, he was our sound man, and probably the one who got us the gigs at The Shaboo. You must have known Michael Foster RIP then? I almost played with him a few times. I remember it burning down, end of an era, the last time we played there was sometime in 81 or 82. Did you know Tommy Dion? Great drummer from Willimantic, he was the Southpaw drummer. Easton does sound familiar now that I think about it. 'Sorry to derail the thread:laugh:'
