Compressor/Limiter (Line6 Constrictor?)

Hi guys,

I'm looking into this compressor, because it's the only cheap compressor I can find in my area. I think I'd love the Markbass but it's far out of my budget.

I've read a lot of Bongo's reviews and this seems to be a winner for my budget. Really, I'm looking for a limiter, though he claims this isn't an ideal limiter, he still says it's decent. I was looking at the Boss LMB-3 but the mid-scoop turns me off.

I read someone say that the Line6 Constrictor took away some punch (which sounds like mid-scoop to me as well). So I'm kind of lost.

I really just want something to limit my peaks and raise my dips. I've spent some good dough on a rig, and it's more for protection from clipping than it is for tone. Also, my budget's somewhere around $100.

Any input would be much appreciated,

I own both the LMB-3 and the Constrictor and prefer them to more expensive compressors I used to own (the MB Compressor, the EBS, the Carl Martin, the Opto Stomp, etc.).

I don't notice a mid-scoop from the LMB-3 at all. If you turn up the Enhance knob, it scoops mids. Of course, you don't have to use it. If someone says the Constrictor takes away some punch, he should have his ears examined or he has no idea how to use a compressor. With the "Squeeze" mode of the Constrictor, it fattens the tone and adds a hell of punch.

Awesome thanks, yeah I also read someone recommending the Squeeze setting. Do you use them in-line with each other and if so, is that because the Line6 isn't a great limiter?

On second thought, I'm going to try to find a LMB-3 in my area (which is practically impossible), but I think it's more suitable for me. It doesn't change the tone much, and I didn't realize that it doesn't boost the lower signals, which is good. I like to dig in on certain notes, and be able to hear that. I just want a limiter to prevent any clipping when I go too hard. Thanks Chrisk-K

I use the LMB-3 for slapping only. All the compressor pedals I've used including the Constrictor are poor at limiting peak signals. I use the Constrictor only for my Geddy to fatten it up. The LMB-3 is a great limiter. Some people complain about noise. Unless you turn up the Enhance knob, it should be quiet (Mine is dead quiet). My setting is level = between 11:00 and noon, enhance = 7:00, ratio = noon & thresh = 1:30. I'm sure you can easily find the setting that serves you well.

I used to use the constrictor, and it was quite nice and versatile compressor. The only reason I sold it was because it couldn't handle the high signal level of my AM DLX Precision Special. If you have an active bass you should check it to see there isn't any distortion.
