Compressor - Which one.

There have been several posts about their CP9Pro+, but few people have bought it because it costs more than the Demeter or EBS, and thus there are also very few of them showing up "used" for cheaper. There has not been much talk about Maxon's cheaper compressors because they aren't that great.

Having tried the Demeter, EBS, Trace Elliot for pedals and the DBX160, Rane DC24, Avalon 737, and countless LA opticals for rackmount ... both live and studio ... I can say with confidence that the Maxon CP9 Pro+ is the best comp pedal made. The Rane is my favorite rack unit, though the others I listed are great as well.

Honestly and seriously, the best thing you can do is take a leap of faith and just pick one, and spend some time with it. That way you can learn more about what it does and doesn't do for your sound, and which features or controls you find yourself using most or missing the most, and use that knowledge as the basis for future purchases.

It uses normal Boss-type 9VDC power. There is a voltage doubling circuit inside which allows it to actually be running on 18V internally, but you just plug it into an ordinary 9VDC outlet. Interestingly, it doesn't draw a huge amount of current either, so the PPII or any other normal supply will work fine.

I playing mostly finger-style. I had the 166xl, but now I like to purchase a "small" version compressor/limiter, so when I go without my rig to small venue gig, I like to take my pedalboard at least and also I am using for home practice and for recording too. So on my list these pedals are, but still not decided which ONE will be on my next order.
Thanks for everyone to taking time to share the experiences with compressors!

THANK YOU TO BONGOMANIA FOR THE GREAT COMP. REVIEWs! YOU DID AN EXCELLENT JOB WITH THAT!

1. DEMETER COMPULATOR
2. MAXON CP9 Pro+
3. EBS MULTICOMP

Hmmm....duno....yet!
Right now I fill the force is very strong with the Demeter.

I've got a 166xl myself but I'm thinking of selling it. I very rarely use it as I tend to be a bit more of a traditionalist and would rather challenge myself to play more evenly. I notice it does color the tone a little bit but to a very miniscule degree.

Hmm....I'm not sure that there is a piece of gear that doesn't color tone to some degree.

Unless leave your amp off and you don't play any notes, silly as that sounds.

It seems to be more about finding the combination of electronics that allow you to play without annoying distractions, be they electronic or just the fundamentals of setting them up in your rig (ergonomic).
