Compressors

wow, i love that sparkle (flake?) finish on the stompbox ... how did you do that?

i got the love squeeze completed today. i also added a clean blend control to it, but i made the blend true true by-passable since i also like the way the pedal sounds stock. the reason that i did install the clean blend was that if i wanted to run it at high compression levels, i can blend in the dry signal and not affect the attack so it also can become a 'sustainer' pedal. the clean blend circuit is also buffered so the pedal also works better with my active basses.

since this pedal is so 'creamy & dreamy' i decided to go with a cream enclosure on this one.

i just built and tested a pigtronix philosopher's twin clone. IMO, it's a pretty darn cool pedal that can have infinite sustain. it also has a germanium grit circuit in it as well as a clean blend. the only issue i had with it is that, even with the output volume control dimed, it was only at unity gain, so i added a mosfet clean boost at the tail end of it as well as an 18V charge pump so i can run it at 18V off of a standard 9V power supply.

just finished up the Pigtronix clone. it's one of my most complex builds to date, but it was worth it, since i really dig this pedal. it's capable of infinite sustain and the germanium 'grit' distortion actually sounds really good to me. IMO, it sounds best running on 18V so i added a built-in charge pump along with a mosfet boost on its output so it'll go way past unity gain at any setting. the extra stomp switch turns the grit on and off and it has a small red led as an indicator for it.

here's a couple of pics of it:

over the weekend i built another compressor. this one is a modified Merlin 'Engineer's Thumb'. i modded it for more low end and added all five controls (attack, release, ration, threshold & volume) + a bright switch.

IMO, these are excellent transparent comps for use with a bass and can go from none, to subtle, to heavy compression.

i actually built two versions of the Engineer's Thumb. one withe the CA3080 chip, and the other with the LM13700. both units sound identical and are excellent comps for a bass.

i built a Toadworks Mr. Squishy this afternoon but wasn't impressed with it at all, so that one's going in the bin.

and i just completed a bajaman UA LA2A style opto limiter and that one is awesome.

Are you going to try the Ross at some point?

I have one of the originals, but am afraid to take it out of the house!

i really don't intend to build a Ross or an MXR. i've owned several of both of the vintage ones in the past and i feel that the ones that i currently build easily surpass them for a bass.
