Compressors

here's a pic of a new one that i built. this one's a limiter, and not a compressor. it's basically an FET/opto type limiter to emulate a UA/teletronix LA-2A it sounds great. the upper yellow led indicates how much limiting you have dialed in.

John, if you could change the yellow LED to what those inexpensive ART Tube Pre's use (a multi-color LED that goes from green to red to show "amt") that would be very cool.

yeah, that would be cool, but in that one you can't since it has to match the led that works with the LDR.

I'm in the market for a compressor...what kinda price are these compressor pedals going for?

the Keeley 4 knob, Pigtronix philopher's twin, Armstrong Orange Squeezer, and the Love Squeeze are all available from dealers online. the others are just customs that i built.

i used a schematic that was posted online and made my own vero of it.

John, you are a prolific dude. Not to mention creative and knowledgeable. I read pretty much any thread you start and learn things every time which is wonderful.

I wonder how close your opto limiter is to the [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] I had for a while. No tweakability but it did have a great sound.

i'd have to see that one's circuit, but i'd bet that it's very simiar.

well, I've built 10 compressor/limiters now so i'm pretty much finished building any more of them. IMO, all 10 of them sound very good (yet different).

1.Toadworks Mr. Squishy (modded) (I finally got this one working perfect!)
2.Demeter Compulator
3.Mictester's opto compressor
4.Keeley 4 knob compressor
5.Emma Transmorgrifier
6.Orange Squeezer with clean blend and compression controls
7.Engineer’s thumb (5 knob)
8.Pigtronix Philosopher’s Twin germanium with output boost
9.Rothwell love squeeze with clean blend
10.Baja Optical Limiter

on top of those, I also built a Boss slow gear (SG-1) and it's also a pretty cool pedal.

well I finally got my Demeter opto compulator clone boxed up. (I really like this one!):

I still need to mount the Toadworks Mr. Squishy and the Mictester Opto Compressor in their enclosures but after I do that, i'm good to go with all of the comps that I've built (i.e., there's no need to build any more of them since they're nice sounding units ;))

I haven't so I can't help you there, but I gotta say, I pulled out my keeley clone (modded for bass) today and was really digging it ALOT.

Any input on how you may have modded the Keeley (Ross) for bass? A lot of the literature I read seems to point to a loss in some other dept. when the input cap is replaced with a higher value. Not sure if this is what you did or not. I have a Keeley two knob and love it.
