Compressors

Thanks John. I've used the non-bass version of the Diamond Comp and really liked it. Not sure if the bass version would be different enough to merit the price jump for the bass version.

Fairly big difference. I have the bass version now and it sounds better in general and waayyyy better with the B on my 5ers.

If I was buying one, I wouldn't consider the non bass version unless it was super cheap.

Anyone with a bass version able to post a pic of the internals? I want to get an appreication for which parts of the circuit have been altered. If its just C4 and C5 or any other minor tweaks.

How do you like it compared to the keeley and the rothwell?

i like it just as much but it has more color (in a good way) than either of them. out of the three of those, I prefer the keeley four knob the most. so far, I think that I like the pale green comp a little more than the forest green though.

I was going to build the Forest Green as my first compressor build... did you do cap substitutions on the Forest Green for bass?

nope. it has plenty of low end, but the reason I haven't boxed it up yet is because I can't get the comp/sustain switch to work the way that it's supposed to. as it is right now, it does nothing and I followed the posted schematic for it exactly.

Forest Green next??? I always like to hear your take on pedals before I try building 'em... Ha ha - I've become a build stalker...

I finally got the Forest Green comp's comp/sustain switch sorted, boxed it up, and it's a great sound compressor. i really dig it in the sustain mode. it's probably my favorite 1590B sized comp now.

BTW, for me, at the top of the heap, of my now 16 compressor pedals, is the Origin Effects Cali76. it's also the largest one (its HUGE!). I compared it to my two original vintage Urie 1176LN's and the comp in UA 6176 and it is pretty darn close to sounding like them. IMO, it doesn't sound exactly like them, but in a live situation, I think that it probably would be hard to tell the difference.

so, my top 3 are now:
Cali76 (large sized)
Diamond Bass comp (medium sized 1590BB)
Forest Green Compressor (small sized 1590B)

Any particular trick that you discovered with the switch? I've got to get started on it soon and would rather ask than run into a similar problem.

Hi john,

I had a little compressor shoot out. The Cali won, followed by the fea db-cl, and the markbass. The accountant is my favorite mini, with the mxr in the mix too.

The Cali is huge but omg its so worth the size
