Am I the only person who uses a restricted account for normal computing? My normal user account can read from all disks, write to my storage disk and home directories, and that's it. Anything else (installing an app, creating new folders on system or application drives) requires me to log in as Administrator.

This is a good idea and I strongly recomend everyone with a multi-user OS do this.

Actually I picked that up when I was doing a lot of Linux Consulting. After learning the way *nix operating systems are designed and laid out I realized that compartmentalizing user accounts was simply a good idea all around. I've been using seperate admin and work accounts on Windows boxes ever since.

I used to, but tbh... I don't really bother any more. I change the Admin password to something totally random (and remember it ;P) and set another user up as an administrator on all my PCs. I'm past the stage of being that fussy about security... the way I figure it, if someone wants to **** things up, they'll do it somehow...

My brother and I are the only real users on my computer, and we both know how not to run into spyware/virusses.

==>No pr0n
==>No fishy downloads/p2p's
==>Don't click adds
==>Don't open mails from people you don't know/with strange
titles/attachments
==>scan daily with various antispyware/virusscanners.
==>watch out with cdroms from other people etc, always scan
first
==>use Firefox instead of IE.

If you follow these basic rules you should have little problems keeping your computer clean.

*Rant time* having a bad day and need to vent.

I install wireless internet (yes, we have technology in the middle of nowhere). I tell this list above to everyone we hook up (except for the pROn part, that's thier choice) and most of my time is spent fixing these computers after they have been hooked up for a few months.

I am amazed at how badly a person can mess up a computer in 2 months. We have firewalls and install Norton (works well for me) on almost every computer we hook up to our system, but you just can't account for user error. :scowl:

For example, 500 files on ad-aware alone yesterday. Then, same computer, 100 files on Spybot. Some are so bad we just have to reformat the computer, but that's usually when they don't tell us about the problem of six months or so. Once you get some of those browser hijacks deep in your system, you almost don't have a choice.

Rant over, thanks for reading, if in fact, you read all that.

I once cleaned two GIG of cookies, trackers adware and god knows what else off my mother in laws computer.

She is one of those people that "never" clicks to install anything unless it says she realy needs it...

Eventually I just refused to fix it for her. I figure if she has to pay best buy $100 every 3 months to clean the thing off it might sink in one of these days...

I fix friends PCs all the time... install virus checkers, firewalls and ad-aware... but they STILL manage to get crap on there, through it all.

The above list is by no means comprehensive, but it's a bloody good start. Problem is, that we (intermediate / advanced computer users) take it for granted that people KNOW what an advert looks like, or are aware of the concequences of installing p2p software. Some people just don't read things through! Some people don't know ANYTHING about computers and just click on everything, everywhere.

If people are really that serious about their PCs... they learn what's right and what's wrong. I have no spyware, haven't had a virus for YEARS and haven't had a hack attempt for about a year now... it all stopped when I got my router - I say stopped... people probably still atempt it, but it's almost impossible for them to get in on anything but port 8181 - which is only active when I have my webcam on :)

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Kaspersky. It's much more powerful than Norton Antivirus or any other antivirus program by a margin. Norton Antivirus picked up 7 viruses on my comp, Kapersky discovered 32. There are several free Invalid Link Removed on their website and if you think you'll need it for more than 30 days, you can PM me and I can do something mildy sexy and or erotic.
