I really enjoy Soulseek, very "light" program to use, doesn't slow down your computer etc. The only problem I sometimes have, is that Soulseek disables my Firefox, but that happens only if you keep flipping screens between Firefox and Slsk. Mind you, it's a music only sharing utility, so you won't be able to download programs, videos etc.

A good p2p is SoulSeek. Thing is, it's really meant for music. But their are other ways to download music and software. The other ones follow as Mirc, Torrents, and FTP.

The down side of Mirc, Torrents, and FTP's is that they can get extremely SLOW. I'm talking like one kb downloading a one gig file.

Any way, as for the spy ware stuff. Get yourself three things, spybot search and destroy, Ad-Aware SE, and a copy of AVG Anti Virus. This is the setup I use and it usually gets rid of all that nasty little spyware you might have lurking in your hard drive.

When it comes to HJT i'm only good at fixing obvious problems. I've some some guys on a support forum take a look at your log file.

popinfresh........Whatever you end up deciding to do, spend some time teaching everyone who touches the PC on how to safely surf the internet. This goes for any operating system. :D

As far as the file sharing software not working, it would be logical that the ports that normally open to allow that function are no longer open. That could be a result of the spyware, or it could be that you shut them down when you started trying to secure your PC after you discovered the spyware. Most of those file sharing applications have decent support forums that can help you get your configuration back after events like this. It happens all the time.

Well, Spikeh...we may not agree on Norton but at least the "dexterity" issue is one thing we can agree on!!!

No flame intended. There are not a lot of users out there who have your need for absolute speed. Most people just want to write emails, surf the net and balance their checkbooks. The VAST majority of these people buy Dells or Gateways. The absolutely last thing you want as an IT guy is having them reformat their hard drives just to clean things up. Think about the insanity of reinstalling all the correct motherboard and device drivers! XP doesn't do everything for you and the missing details will bite them in the ass. Like I said, it's a last resort.

As far as Norton is concerned, I've used it forever and have no complaints. Like I said in the original post, everyone has their favorites whether it be anti-virus, disk cleanup, defragmenter, spyware protector, etc. For the average joe user who just wants his box to work when he pushes the "On" button, it's a fully integrated product that's simple, easy to use and does a lot of tasks automatically. More savvy users can do their research and find what suits them; but for a typical home user, just get something simple and effective. And even though someone may come out with a new, cool take on protection, Symantec isn't likely to disappear as a company any time soon. That's comforting.

PS: Every corporation I've worked for uses either Norton or McAfee for it's enterprise-wide virus protection, more Norton than anything else. These virus centers have a tough job responding quickly to rapidly developing threats almost every day. They all do a hell of a job. It's up to us to keep our systems up to date and, more than anything...

ESPECIALLY IF THEY SAY YOU CAN SEE BRITNEY SPEARS NAKED!!!

People have to be a lot more diligent and a lot less stupid! All the more reason to have good virus and spam shields in place. So... Sorry if you felt it was a flame. I just don't recommend people reformatting hard drives unless: a. it's a serious problem; and b. they REALLY know what they're doing.

OK - well, you're right in terms of people should know what they're doing before formatting - that kinda goes without saying... I mean, I wouldn't recommend any of our users (even the IT bods ;P) formatting their PC... they'd bugger it right up!

We use McAfee at work, and yes - the bigger corporations are brilliant at keeping up to date. I had a hell of a time with quite a few installations of Norton, and I'm afraid I lost all faith in them from 2000 onwards... McAfee on the other hand are a decent solution for corporations, or even for personal use, but I still feel they're a little too bulky for what you need at home. I've tried all sorts and I've honestly found AVG the best. Again, personal opinion, but It's done me for about 4/5 years now!

Hi dannyboy15, welcome to SWI.

Please print out this post so that you have a hard copy of these instructions. You will need to keep Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer (including My Computer) closed throughout the entire process.

Please download Intermute's CWShredder from here:

Save it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Then please download About:Buster from here:

Unzip it to the desktop, run it, Check for Updates, and update the files, but do NOT run a scan yet.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:

Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

Once in Safe Mode, please run CWShredder, and click Fix.

Then please run About:Buster and click Start to begin the scan. If prompted to end the Explorer.exe process, click Yes. Your desktop may disappear --- this is normal. Allow the program to scan twice, and when complete click "Save Log". This will create a text file called "AB Logfile.txt" in the folder where About:Buster is saved. I will want to see this logfile later.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the log from the scan for me.

Finally, please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check:
