Concentric Pot?

I wired my P/J like a 62 jazz as per the Fender diagram. Besides the 60's cycle hum from my J pick up (which isn't that bad) I get a lot of noise with the tone on the J pot rolled all the way up. When it's rolled down it goes away. Is there a fix for this?

Sounds like the tone pot is eliminating the noticeable frequencies of the hum. All it does is roll of high frequencies. It's not going away, really... just having the loud highs removed.


In any case, you'd kinda need to shield the cavity or something to help the hum. Or get quieter pickups.

Also, the usual search of computers, TVs, lighting, etc that could cause the hum.

I did sheild the controll cavity and the J pickup cavity with copper tape. The noise I get sounds like ground noise more than hum. I used a SD 1/4 pounder at the bridge. Also I noticed that when the volumes are at 3/4 when I turn the J volume up or down there seems to be a cut in volume. A full theres no cut and below 3/4 theres no cut. Strange.
