I have been away for a couple decades and upon my return I am floored with all the options out there for bass amps. Is it possible to have one amp that is able to cover blues/soul stuff with my tapewound strung precision and "hi Fi" modern slap/funk tones with my roundwound maple board Jazz Bass? I have always considered the vintage SVT the king but I simply can't move that cabinet anymore, it's just too big and heavy. I have read 100's of threads only to end up more confused. I know the sound of 10's is what I'm after but Mesa? Aquilar? Ampeg? Thunderfunk? they all look good. I don't need a powerhouse, 500 watts should be plenty and lightweight would be a big plus! Can anybody at least give me some direction as to an amp that could cover both ends of the spectrum? I kinda like the looks of the Mesa M6 but don't know if it could come close to Ampeg territory? The Thunderfunk looks good but I don't know if it could get close enough for blues/soul stuff???

I'm very, very happy with my Ampeg SVT-III pro. Weighs less than half of the original SVT.
I've used it with a very wide range of cabinets and it always sounds "Ampeg" to me.
As for versatility, I can play any style with it. It's got a very flexible EQ if needed.
I'm also impressed with the sound of the Eden heads I've used. Also very versatile.
The heads that I have felt limited by in terms of flexibility were GK, SWR and Ashdown - but that's strictly my experience. I know those amps have legions of fans.
As far as cabinets go, I'm a die-hard Eden fan, but if Ampeg is what you liked in the past why not check out an Ampeg 410 or a pair of 210s? They're good, affordable cabs that sound an awful lot like Ampegs!

Find a used Ampeg pre (I love my SVP-CL) and a good power amp to match it up to. My total amp weighs in at 38#, has 900W/ch output. I only use one side of it into a 4x10 and it's more than I ever need.
I was in a similar situation 2 years ago after not playing or having any equipment for over 25 years. I bought Fender Rumble 60 combo and a Jazz bass not even knowing that it required batteries for the pre-amp. It is over-whelming and expensive to get started again. What I would do in your case is to go to the nearest Mega store and do your homework without buying anything so quickly. Of course you don't have to go with all new stuff and by the upcoming holiday weekend, stores should be running sales. This site has good stuff for sale as does Craig's List(be careful !). I have Ampeg,Fender and Genz-Benz but there is so much out there , you'll have to decide for yourself, it's your $$$....................Have fun and good luck .
