Double Bass Connecting Flight W/ Double Bass

Has anyone had experience with not flying direct with their double basses? If so, did the airline check it all the way to your destination or did you have to pick it up at baggage claim between flights? I usually don't check bags on flights, so I'm unsure of how it works.

Depends on whether it's an international flight in my experience. If not, anything checked as luggage goes all the way through to the destination. If it's international, I usually have to pick up the bass and take it through customs, then check it again. Last time I did this, the airline had a re-check point right after customs, so it was as little inconvenient as it could have been.
