Consistent tone across the strings

if you ever get a 5 string you will feel the same about the low B string. Strings do sound different because they have different mass. And especially when they age the low strings go first.

He's complaining because the harmonics are covering up the fundamental. Although many of us like strings when they are new (I do), he will actually like strings better after a while, as he doesn't like the harmonics - he wants to hear the fundamental MORE. Which means dead strings/flats.

Small Update. I messed around a bit with the neck pickup height. When it was closer I got more highs, obviously. Lowering it gave me a rounder tone, even if a bit quieter. I also checked the string wasn’t twisted. Now the mix sits just right. That kind of nasal low-mid thing is just part of the Jazz Bass character. I guess the short answer to my question would’ve been: just get a P Bass.
