Conversation I've had with my drummer

....I auditioned a while back for a guy who had a little event band and some of the feedback was that he thought I played to much on some stuff....I've played Mustang Sally about 949,656 times and I am not playing that as is. Sorry, ain't gonna happen....

It sounds to me like you probably ARE overplaying and just don't care. If you overplay on Mustang Sally and lose the groove you deserve to lose the gig. IMO.

Didn’t lose the gig, I turned it down.

And you can hold down the groove and still stretch out. It is possible.

Not to pile on or anything, but as no one else has mentioned, I would also say to work on muting as well. I could hear quite a few unintentional notes, especially during the busy parts. Possible the drummer heard that as well when it was busier and thus asked to simplify it some. He could have been nicer about it though.
