The Minutemen's hometown, but then, not that far away from the "South Bay", the collection of beach communities that Black Flag/SST emerged from.

First photo, one I took of him in a college dorm room, decades ago. He was from Chicago, and deeply immersed in the blues, having witnessed his hometown heritage up close. It was well past the hippie era infatuation with the genre, not so trendy anymore, and I had had enough of the watered down British thing which had run its course anyway. While I had started doing my homework on the obvious Chess stuff, he deepened my knowledge even further, and turned me on to this new label, Alligator, and their unlikely star, Hound Dog Taylor. We'd jam a bit with a guitarist who was in a similar situation as me, but we all eventually
went our separate ways. I stayed in touch with the guitarist for about 10 years.
Some time ago I come to find that not only was Bob was still at it, but was the proprietor of a blues focused club in Phoenix, The Rhythm Room, and toured/recorded with an older Chicago guitarist, John Primer, who had played with Muddy Waters and other notables. A local(Los Angeles)blues event promoter brought them in for a weekend of gigs, so I went to the one closest to me(second photo). Over 40 years had lapsed since I'd seen him…I walked up on a break, gave him that first photo, reintroduced myself, and it blew his mind. We chatted a bit, caught up, got the sad news that the guitarist had died of cancer. Life goes on.
