this was their lone UK gig and it spawned a whole new genre of music. Punk lore is, if only 100 people were there that nite to witness unbeknownst history being made, on the power of the performance and the spectacle of their front man, 50 of them immediately went out and put bands together, then half of those soon became famous.

Jim Capaldi: "it was his performance that made him Paul Kossoff. he'd put his amp out in the studio, loud, you know, his hair brushed back and the headphones on, always very serious. when he started to play it would become a real performance, kind of an occasion, not just overdubbing a guitar, I mean he was really putting his soul into it every time he picked the guitar up. it was great to watch him, he had a natural sympathy to whatever he was doing."

as far as who started Rock n Roll, it's Fred, whether he meant to or not, he grabbed a doghouse bass out of Great Depression era desperation and made a big noise on it to get attention without knowing how to actually play bass, or anything. the original Punk! he got his brothers to pick up instruments, his 11yr old sister to sing, they got good enuf to get sponsored, by 1938 they became The Maddox Brothers and Rose, and the rest was history. along the way a direct connection was made, Bill Black, Elvis's Sun Records bassist, Fred was his idol.

I met Fred in about 1985 in a dive bar in Greenfield, south of Bakersfield, while meeting up with a promoter to sign up for local music festival to raise money to help build the Bakersfield country music hall of fame. He was sitting at the bar and the promoter asked me if I wanted to meet him. I sat next to him and introduced myself and asked if I could buy him a drink. He said "scotch!"
When I asked him what advice he had for a young bass player, he said....
"Keep em coming!"
