i was at the ARMS show at the cow palace in the city. at the end clapton, page & beck took the stage together to jam layla. i jumped up, left the seats, went down and wormed my way to proscenium edge. iirc simon phillips manned the drums & fernando saunders his fretless. the three guitar players were clearly affected by the moment, exchanging telling glances the entire time. i was affected too, and not just me - i looked around in the dim. a lot of moist eyes!!

A little bit of cool ZZ Top trivia.

The original ZZ Top line-up was formed in Houston, TX and consisted of Gibbons, bassist/organist Lanier Greig, and drummer Dan Mitchell.

They released their first single, "Salt Lick", in 1969, and the B-side contained the song "Miller's Farm". Immediately after the recording of "Salt Lick", Greig was replaced by bassist Billy Ethridge and Mitchell was replaced by Frank Beard. Ethridge quit the band and Dusty Hill was selected as his replacement. So, Gibbons, Beard, and Hill became the new ZZ Top lineup in late 1969. They performed their first concert together at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Beaumont, TX on February 10, 1970 and the rest is history as they say.

So are you saying that the longest running band lineup in history is comprised completely of non-original members?!?!?!?

If that is so, then I'll consider my mind blown for the rest of the day.

Here is another impressive tenure for a band. While not the original lineup that started in 1961, Golden Earring has had the same lineup since 1970.

• Rinus Gerritsen – bass, keyboards, guitar, harmonica (1961–present)
• George Kooymans – guitar, vocals (1961–present)
• Invalid Link Removed – vocals, guitar, flute, saxophone (1967–present)
• Cesar Zuiderwijk – drums, percussion (1970–present)

Go back and reread that; Gibbons has been in the entire time that there’s been a “ZZ Top” band. Those early singles are on the box set.
