John Coltrane Draws a Picture Illustrating the Mathematics of Music
The "Coltrane circle," which resembles what any musician will recognize as the "Circle of Fifths," but incorporates Coltrane's own innovations. Coltrane gave the drawing to saxophonist and professor Yusef Lateef in 1967, who included it in his seminal text, Repository of Scales and Melodic Patterns.
Lateef sees Coltrane's music as a "spiritual journey".
Musician and blogger Roel Hollander notes, "Thelonious Monk once said 'All musicians are subconsciously mathematicians.' Musicians like John Coltrane though have been very much aware of the mathematics of music and consciously applied it to his works."

California Jammin! they finally came on after a smoking set by Black Sabbath in the afternoon's daylight (ultimate RnR sacrilege) and with 2 new members they had a lot to prove to 1/4million fans, which they instantly showed they were up to with a burning Burn as an opener. I was skeptical for about 10secs and the rest was TV history as Richie tore it up before exploding the stage and causing drummer Ian to go deaf. things you could do in the '70s and make a good living at ...even tho he had to run away in a helicopter to avoid arrest for destroying an expensive CBS camera lens with his Strat. he got the bill eventually.
