I got to play at being a D.J. for a year in '68, before my career was cut short by an unfortunate event in the newsroom. I hadn't heard of Beaker St. yet, and Janesville was pretty much a backwater town, musically. I had a one hour show at 7 pm called the Top Nine Toons. Yeah, I had to play Billboard's top 9 each night. Pretty boring stuff. My brother was the news reader. The station (WCLO) was rebranding with new call letters. They had paid $1500 (in '68 money) for some new jingles, which they stupidly took delivery of on an unmarked, unlabeled 1/4" tape reel...that looked EXACTLY like the tape reels my brother used for his news casts. One of his tasks, at the end of his shift was to bulk erase the reels he had used to have them ready for the morning news guy. I'm sure you can guess what's coming. He bulk erased the reel with the new jingles (the ONLY copy; no backup). The station had to pay again to have them rerecorded. We both got fired. Fargin' bastidges. Here's the ad for the new FM station that lead to the rebranding (now WJVL, a country music station, woo hoo!).
