It would seem to me that that information, along with whether it is hex or round, is easily ascertained with a micrometer. The core is exposed at both ends. This is where the comparison to Coca-Cola fails—you can't take Coke apart into its components.

You can take Coca-cola apart. You just need to invest in some specialized equipment to do the chromatography and spectroscopy required.
