One of the coolest slappers I've seen live yet was EBS/Neuser endorser Jan-Olof Strandberg.

I don't mind that name. It's a little thoughtless maybe, but it could be worse.

Some might think this is cliche, but I voted for Flea. He actually does have the best slap sound and technique that I've heard/seen. If you think otherwise, maybe you should watch the "Starlicks Sessions with FLEA" video. He really shows his AMAZING skill, which many people sometimes don't get a chance to see since he's not a solo artist. also, everything he does is improvization! IMO Flea is the best around.

hey where is fieldy at???? he is pretty good and he'd get my vote but since he's not i had to go with flea because he's my main influence. if you've been playin a year and haven't learned how to slap get some help. hey here is some right here so anyway you can slap any string a good way to learn to get used to it is play songs like "give it away" or any other song that doesnt slap on the high d and g and try slappin those notes, it is frustrating at first but you'll get used to it. try out this bass line (to make it easier put your fingers in that position to start.)

also you might want to start using both hands to slap....if you've ever heard the song dig by mudvayne. their bassist....who is awesome.....uses both hands to slap....for instance....

uhm, okay, WASTEBLADDER, don't go advising the guys here on slapping when you seem to have little idea about the art yourself. saying that someone needs help if they can't slap if they've been learning for a year or so is really uncalled for - all you're doing to the young guys out there is making them feel they won't be any good if they can't slap ! if you were a teacher i'd seriously be questioning your approach at this point. slapping is good to know but most gigs won't require you to do it - good consistent fingerstyle is what people are after in a bassist (technique-wise) these days. my definition: it's really just the bass-equivalent of wanking. posting your little "free lesson" in tablature zaps your credibility even more, man - we have pros on the site to hand out quality instruction, we don't need any more, thanks.

Try plucking with your middle finger: it's longer and has more reach. Also, as a lot of funk slap uses a lot of octaves, fifhs etc all that you really have to move is your left hand- your right doesn't actually have to do much.

Bassdaddy - the bastardization of your name has become sort of a tradition on Talkbass. He was not being rude, he was trying to treat you as one of our own.

And he was right, you don't need to learn how to slap before you learn how to properly play fingerstyle.

But, Tones, if the guy wants to learn, then let him learn. He may just want to learn slap and have fun. To each his own.

But play nice or I'll shut it down, cool?
