Double Bass Could use some serious help...

Holbein basses are Strunal Laminate Model 50/1 that Sam Ash marketed in their stores. I have a Strunal 50/4 Laminate with ebony trim and I use Spirocore Orchestra strings and an Underwood pick-up.

BTW..for amplification I use a GK 200MB with a GK 150MX extension cabinet. I get plenty of volume.

Mingus, a guy from David Gage put it on himself so I think it is good.

John G, yeah i will definitely prop the amp on a chair tm morning at practice... I am using the Hartke now which is definitely making out better then the GK... now I don't know what to do with the GK though.

one last question... have any of you ever heard of Holbien Bass' are they considered cheap... last question thanks a again

10 sax's, 8 trumpets, 5 bones, loud drummer, plus the song is at 300 and its 8 minutes long of straight walking...

Phiew...that sounds like quite a challenge, indeed! (What song are you working on?)

Anyway, one more thing just sprung to mind: What strings do you have on the bass? E.g. switching from strings primarily intended for arco playing (potentially old and "dead") to brand new Thomastik Spirocores can make a world of a difference w.r.t. volume, sustain and "growl". (If money is tight you could start by replacing the E string to see if you like it. Also it's not uncommon to mix a Spiro E with other strings, for a little extra puff and sustain in the lowest register.)

I am turning my amp down little by little and recording rehearsal everyday, because after working on getting a strong tone with out an amp it makes a big difference like you guys said

Before you go spending a bunch of money on new amps and other expensive options, check whether you have impedance matching issues. Unless your amp has a very high impedance input level, your problem with "not sounding like an upright bass" and your volume problem are probably both due to impedance mismatching. The Gage pickup on the Eminance, at least, is 3MΩ Many bass amps don't work well at that level.

Then if that doesn't help you can look at more expensive or more time-consuming options.

But try the simpler cheaper stuff first.

I'll second that. fdeck's unit provides 10 M ohm input impedance, and a high pass filter, something you might find very useful for amplified DB with a variety of back-end amps.
