could you please sell me on Jaco?

Everything I ever read about Jaco indicated he was musically literate and an accomplished composer and arranger. A number of composers are self taught. Frank Zappa was another self taught composer.

Ah @Dr. Cheese .. at 46 years of age for me it was time to put what I heard and read together in order to form an opinion on certain things .. I have previously illustrated mine with regard to Jaco and I believe it could be considered objective enough ..

Some guys were born born to be genius like Bird Trane Jaco or what Allan Holsworth ,and nobody’s became a genius studying 16 hours a day geniality it’s impressed in his genetic code practice improve your skills that’s all

True .. in fact the album “Jaco” is a gem but you do not necessarily have to be the highest level literate in music to conceive, play and record it ...

High level literate in music it’s irrelevant remember Allan Holsworth can’t read a single note or Paco de Lucia even with this high level you mentioned lot of guys can’t play those tunes

His melodic sense and choice of notes (like with David Gilmour). Sure, Jaco was impressive technically because he worked hard on his chops, but lots of other bassists sport faster playing and more amazing chops. For those who are looking for impressive showoffery, there are innumerable bassists who have gone further than Jaco. I am among those who value melody and creative accommodation for the song, and for me no one comes close.

For me its all about musicality. Plenty of players these days have faster/better chops than Jaco but when i listen to them I largely hear nothing but noise. Jaco more musical sounding to me than those others.

same with slap playing for me. Lots of players out there with fast, highly developed chops but again all i hear is noise. Than i put Marcus Miller on and here slap that is much more musical sounding.

I don't like or get everything he did, but his playing on A Remark You Made, has brought a tear to my eyes on more than one occasion.
