.. I agree on the fact that it’s difficult to tell other people what they should pay attention to, when listening to music, in order for them to like that music .. the whole process is clearly highly subjective .. probably the OP just wanted other users to start a chat about Jaco Pastorius and his role in the development and affirmation of the electric bass as an instrument per se .. in my opinion, in this regard, Jaco occupies one of highest places .. it’s a pity that his career and life ended in the way they ended as he could have gifted us with other beautiful tunes although he probably wasn’t a literate of the instrument and a few people may really know which his actual level of formal music education was (Jaco claimed to have learnt how to arrange for big-bands during his early years, with the CC Riders) ... however I’d prefer having him in my band (if I had a band, of course, which I don’t .. just hypothetical scenario) rather than many of the contemporary, so-called masters of the instrument as I still have to listen to an album gem, such as “Jaco”, recently recorded by them ...

Having been Jaco oriented during his travels on this globe, I am thinking that he is puking in his grave after reading most of these posts about him. He would say learn music, practice your craft, love good music, and button it. IMHO
I was doing some IT work in an office and heard Joni Mitchell singing over the speakers, then I heard the bass and I said “that’s Jaco” . I didn’t know this album existed before then but I recognised the player.
Yeah, he put the bass miles ahead of where it was and I applaud anyone who can do the same. I remember also that a lot of guys hit the woodshed when that first album was released so I suppose it was groundbreaking at the time.

Oh well it definitely was and, to me, it is so even if it would be issued now for the first time !
I'm not really meaning anything like that.
All I'm meaning is Charlie Parker is a big deal. His music is a major part of bebop repertoire, so it's natural for his music to be incorporated into jazz education. All tunes you have to know how to play the melodies, including a lot of Parker bebop heads. So all students have to know melody, comp and solo on every tune the school prescribed when tested.
It's really normal for jazzers to be able to play bebop melodies. Here's Joe Pass and NHØP playing Donna Lee.
Again I didn't actually say anything negative. If I didn't think he was good I wouldn't have bought a bunch of his music over the years.
Never heard this version it’s absolutely amazing who plays the dB? It’s outstanding

Dave Kochanski. I've seen Brian a few times, but only once on DB. That was with the Rob Mullins Trio, at Bon Appétit in Westwood in the mid 1980s.

Are you saying Jaco was not literate? He read and wrote music at a very high level. He was largely self taught, but he did indeed learn arranging and reading in general when he was touring in R&B bands.
Well, I never met Jaco, so I don’t know the exact situation .. i heard many things he stated especially when his mental health wasn’t actually at 100% ..
Guys from the CC Riders stated what they stated although it’s difficult to grasp the actual truth as now there’s certainly a tendency to fuel the myth and I’m under the impression that the various guys releasing interviews and testimonies of their past relations with Jaco are not fully genuine or tend to exaggerate the reality a bit .. so, in my opinion, yes, Jaco did what he could at the best of his possibilities being a touring musician, but I’m of the opinion (you may have a different one, of course, and the earth will continue to revolve around the sun the same) that his level of formal musical knowledge may not be the same as of someone who formally studied music for years achieving graduation .. this, however, doesn’t diminish his status as a great musician and innovator.
Everything I ever read about Jaco indicated he was musically literate and an accomplished composer and arranger. A number of composers are self taught. Frank Zappa was another self taught composer.
Some guys were born born to be genius like Bird Trane Jaco or what Allan Holsworth ,and nobody’s became a genius studying 16 hours a day geniality it’s impressed in his genetic code practice improve your skills that’s all
