Country 5-String Recommendations

I play country & reggae and although I play rather expensive custom basses, I have modified several MIM Fender Jazz 5 strings. They sound & play great & with some mods on the electronics can be truly great axes. You can pick one up on craigslist for less than $400. I saw one here in Austin yesterday for $250. Then drop some better pups in there & get a set up.....viola! I used Barts, but there are plenty of choices.

I also have a Squier Affinity Jazz 5 string ($229 new) that rocks! I put some Dogal flats & a Hipshot bridge on it & I take it out on the road sometimes. I actually like the stock pups. Not so with the MIM Fender version. I hated them & replaced them w/Barts.

Saw Miranda Lambert tonight . Her bassplayer had a Jazz and he just killed it . It was a 4 string but I imagine a Jazz 5er would work great too . It was a crowd of about 27,000 people and was the same PA as the two nights before with Steve Miller and then Charlie Daniels but the bass player in Mirandas band cut through better . Steve Millers bass player , Kenny Lee Lewis , had a Kot Jazz style 5 string bass and he sounded great too . Charlie Daniels bass player had a well used 55-94 Lakland and it cut through well too but the Jazz Mirandas bass player had really sounded great .

I like the G&L L2500 Tribute but there's no dealer near me, even guitar center doesn't carry them. I'll try the Ibanez ATK if I find one, There's only 2 local stores and ones mostly Ibanez and one's mostly Fender, the Fender dealer said he loves G&Ls, he had one but he said the Tributes aren't worth buying, I'm not in any real hurry, I'm gonna buy a guitar first trying to decide between an Ibanez AF105, AK94, and G&L S-500. Maybe they'll get some merchandise in soon though, I played a gig Saturday with my $129 Rogue LX205 so anything will be ideal after this thing.

Keep in mind, a lot of what you might expect to hear in a particular genre comes from your hands, not just the bass. You can get a long way to the right sound in how you adjust your playing style. Something with which to experiment.

The key is modern Country. ( it's all about looks)
If you want to use a 5-string knock yourself out.
But, you don't need a 5-string to play country.
Twenty years ago, everyone played a 4-string Fender.
Five string looks nice in the video's. :D:D:D

Please tell me it wasn't an employee at GC or Sam Ash that told you this? :scowl:

I know several of my friends that working and don't play a Jazz. Nothing wrong with playing a Jazz at all, great basses, but that statement made by a music store worker is not entirely accurate. The current trend in Nashville is 4 strings for sure. 5ers still have their place though.

My suggestion is, as many others have said, a Stingray 5. They work for me anyways.

I've got a Schecter D P 5 and I love it... it has all the punch and tight lows that I like.... it's a very clear sounding Bass and responds to right hand technique very well. I play Rock, Blues, Old School and Modern R&B, Funk and Old School and Modern Country. It's a great buy here:

I had an Am. Dlux P Bass (1997) and the Schecter sound just as good and it's passive.
