Rounds can sound like flats with the right patch settings(Line 6 HD500X, etc), not so much the other way.

See my avatar pic just to the left? Weird dude in a funky hat? Yup, Warwick 5-er with rounds, playing all kinds of country. Just move the right hand forward or back a bit and maybe palm-mute a bit for the Waylon stuff. Hartke hybrid head with flat EQ mostly, (mid bump for the fretless) in my big-rig, Carvin Micro for small to mid size gigs.

I've had the same set of Labella deep talkin' flats on my Lakland Joe Osborn 5 (with the Fralins) for going on 5 years now. Every now and then I'll bust out my 55-01 with rounds on it, but I always find myself going to the JO5. I've really gotten my money's worth out of those strings. I mostly play old school country though; Waylon, Paycheck, Hank, etc.

I like flats on everything. I don't slap, which is one thing I think flats would be a worse choice for. I am going to experiment with slide soon, which may prove to be worse with flats.

I always used to use rounds and then realized that a lot of stuff I dug was played with flats so I switched.

Tried half rounds for a couple of months this summer, but heard too much twangy-ness going on.

I have rounds on one PJ5, Flats on another (Chromes)...Plenty of use for both.

I also play in a country band but we also are a party/rock band as well. I used GHS Boomers but switched to the Roundcore Boomers when they came out and they sound great. I play 10-15 gigs per month that are 3-4 hours each and 1 set last the whole month. Technically you could use them for longer but I like newer strings.

I tried Chromes on one of my basses in my country band but I prefer rounds my go-to choice is Rotosounds. I just mess with the tone knob or treble knob depending on the bass I am using.

One thing to note...If you got only one bass with you, it's often easier to dial down the tone to get thud from rounds than it is to crank up cut/grind out of flats...
