Country living...........sucks

For most of my life growing up, I have always lived in the country and liked it. I am not sure why I ever have though. I enjoy the seclusion and privacy, but that's about it.

I am sick of it. - I have to drive 20 minutes to go ANYWHERE.....I mean anywhere. No pizza delivery, no "let's grab some fast food" without taking an hour, no cable.....crappy dsl internet. I've actually been alright with all of that, but not thrilled.

What I can NOT deal with, is the apparent rodent problem. Last year I caught FIVE freaking RATS in my house, and some assorted mice. I went on an all out assault on them with the works....snap traps, glue traps, and poison which led to me having to take a sawzall through my floor to get the dead rat out of my duct work that made my house unlivable for the time it was there and rotting. I cannot even begin to explain how horrible this was. Luckily, we seemed to have gotten rid of them and have been doing good....until a couple days ago. Freaking mouse in my room. Put out the traps, and caught him within a day. Today what do I find? A freaking mouse runs across my desk right in front of me while I sat here on the computer. Tricky bastrich removed the peanut butter off of the trap TWICE without tripping it.

It doesn't seem like there is anything I can do about it. I live in the middle of a bunch of fields. My closest neighbor a couple hundred yards away.....a cattle farmer. Less than a mile away.....a landfill which has become HUGE over the last couple years which without a doubt is contributing to the problem. I understand it is harvest season....with the crops coming off the bastriches are all out looking for new homes, but I really think the landfill is the bigger issue here. It's humungous. In the winter it looks like a ski resort. They bring trash in by rail from all kinds of neighboring states.....THANKS. The bigger the landfill gets, the worse my rodent problem is. We lived here 2 years without ANYTHING, and last year was horrible.

I plan to buy a new home in town in late spring/early summer......I just hope I can deal with this mess until then. I don't think it is time to the extent of last years rat infestation.

Any ideas on preventative measures I can take to make it as minimal as possible this winter? Pointless to try to seal off any and all tiny holes. Not proud to say, but I live in a double wide on rented land currently. One of the worst financial decisions we ever made, but that's another story. Anyway, with the covering that is underneath this dump, they can just chew through any old given spot they feel like chewing into.

Actually, if it were a possibility.....I'd probably just pack up and move to town now until I am able to buy. I don't want to deal with this crap again. Two problems with that idea; I have three house dogs.....a 180# rottie, a 70# golden, and a fat beagle. No landlord is going to allow my guys to live in their rental. Secondly, I'd have to break a lease by only living there until I bought a house within the next 6 months.

This sucks

Órale Homes',
Sound's like Iron River Michigan.......with-out the Rat's and Chicago style pizza and Authentic Comida (food) Mexicano!!!

I HATE living in the city! I'd trade for a country life anyday. theres way to much hustle in the city. Always gotta be doing something, everyone is so uptight. I hate it.

That and theres no gang problems out in the country..

Findlay is more or less rich folk suburbia.....and I am looking into the middle to mid-high areas.

Gangs aren't a problem, and it is small enough to avoid most of the rush.

Oh, well, if you let him out he will kill the ones outside, and prevent them from reappearing inside after he kills them in there. Litter boxes really smell terrible, and I always found it kinda cruel to keep a cat locked up inside. My cat stays out all day and comes in at night.

My closest neighbor is a farmer, and there's a lot more for him to do around there than here. I dont think he would stick around long.

I vote pellet rifle, thats what I do to the chipmunks and the mice here. I'll tell ya if your not a good shot you will have some pretty nasty holes in the floor.
The only place I have seen any real rodent problem is in Honduras *tegucigalpa, man those damn rats were as big as my full grown cat. There was a more pressing issue of the mosquitos though.

I guess it's an age thing...I'm 38 and looking at property in the country. I'm sick of Atlanta's traffic, having to work my heavy duty clutch in my truck...leg starts to shake after 5 miles of in and out with it..lol
All the noise, the red lights etc...I WANT my neighbors far from my house....If I have a party, no-one complains, if I want to walk outside in my undies to let the dog out, I don't get that weird look from the neighbor thats 25 feet away. NO traffic...just got to watch for deer. Cleaner air.....Oh yea!!
I grew up hanging out in Atl. and the 'burbs. I am so ready for the change.
And hey, no pizza joint???? Great way to get your own business...right?

Yes, country does have it perks....no way would I want to live in a big city. I am talking small city (but expanding - was the fastest growing city in the US a couple years ago). Population is about 40,000.

When my grandmother was dying of cancer, several of my cousins confronted me as a group and informed me that, as the oldest grandson, it was my duty to take over the family farm.

I said " NOOOOOOOOOOooooo! I like living in a sleepy little community of only a third of a million people. I never want to live out in the sticks again. I remember what it was like!"

But I knew that my wife is more traditionally-minded than I am, so I was afraid she would say "Well, it IS your duty." But fortunately she had grown up in a similarly small town and said "Eeeeew No."

We passed on it, and my cousin David, the second oldest grandson, moved in, so all is well.

But while I was worried that she would feel we had to move there, I had come up with a list of reasons that living in a really small town sucks. I found the list weeks later and decided to use it so I wrote a song.

And everything I complain about in this song is for real. Think of it as a 'Practically True Story' (I heard someone use that phrase the other day and I dug it. I may have to use it in a song, too.)

Small Towns

Just a tiny piece of land,
Hard, red clay and sand,
Handed down in my family, to me.
Well God blessed the working man.
But I don't have farmers hands.
So I moved away, to where I'm supposed to be.

Mama says that I've got neon in my veins.
But I remember a strip of weeds growing right down the center of Main,
And a dog, sleeping in the intersection.
Was that Elm Street and Clark?
I belong in this big city,
But that small town's in my heart.

Uncle John still builds hot rods.
Twenty years in the same job.
Back home, where you're put is where you stay.
The sisters both teach school,
And complain about new rules
And they'll tell you that they worry about kids today.

Mama says that I've got neon in my veins.
But I remember a strip of weeds growing right down the center of Main.
And a dog sleeping in the intersection.
Was that Peachtree and Clark?
I belong in this big city.
But that small town's in my heart.

Everyone sees Dr. Worth.
Any time that they get hurt.
'Cause he's the only doc for miles around.
The whole town knows he drinks.
But everybody thinks.
That they're lucky to have a Doctor there in town.

Mama says that I've got neon in my veins.
But I remember a strip of weeds growing right down the center of Main.
And a dog sleeping in the intersection
Was that Maple and Clark?
I belong in this big city.
But that small town's in my heart.

The whole town knows that Dan
Is dating once again.
Because his car was parked at Mary Ann's.
His divorce was such a shame.
And Julie is to blame.
'Cause we all heard what she did with that guy, Ken.

Mama says that I've got neon in my veins
But I remember a strip of weeds growing right down the center of Main.
And that dog sleeping in the intersection.
It was Clark and Pecan
A small town ain't no place to be.
But it's a great place to be from.

I've got rats in my garage. I've got traps. I caught some but now that I want to catch one and take a picture to start a thread they're scarce. I will post when I have news. All is quiet sir.

Unless you enclose rats such that they have no choice due to starvation they usually won't touch your usual "snap traps" - they're too smart. The trick is to close all entry and exit points (in our last house it was a torn crawlspace vent cover - in the middle of the city), and then trap.

As for mice - you'll have 'em. I've never had a house that didn't, not in the middle of the city or out in the country.

I live in the middle of a huge city, and in a semi-detached. I get mice every once/while, though I've done a lot of renovating that has made a big difference with plugging holes etc. Here's what I think: Caulking won't help. Get steel wool and metal tape - stuff and tape as much as you can. Poison baits seem to just attract more and the stuff you get @ a hardware store ain't strong enough. Kill traps are the only answer. And clean up after yourself and your pets - no dishes in the sink/on the counter/stove etc. Pick up or put away your pets food if they don't finish it before you go to bed. Do your best to move far away from the dump! FYI - there's also rats around in garbage cans etc. For that I use poison in my shed, but I don't know how much it's helping. And if you ask me squirrels are just as disgusting as rats. Tree rats. People see them in the park, think it's cute and feed them, but scream bloody murder if they see a rat.

Love these lyrics dude. Good stuff. :)

Caulking won't help. Get steel wool and metal tape - stuff and tape as much as you can.

I would indeed do this, but it seems pointless. The whole bottom of the place is covered with like a 9 mil plastic as a vapor barrier covering the insulation, and floor. Unless I covered the entire bottom of the place, I don't think it would be of great help.

Poison baits seem to just attract more and the stuff you get @ a hardware store ain't strong enough.

Actually, I found them to be quite effective. The downside is...when this was a problem with rats last year, one died in the duct work which required a reciprocating saw through the floor to get to it to get it out, nasty. My dog pointed out something of interest behind the dryer while the wife was doing laundry one day. Thinking one of his tennis balls must have rolled behind there, she pulled the dryer out to find another dead rat. Disgusting. But alas, the poison ended the problem last year anyway.

Kill traps are the only answer.

Yep. I've caught 5 mice in the damn house in the last 3 days using snap traps, and apparently I have a pretty crafty one who was able to completely clean the peanut butter off of the trap last night without setting it off. I've also had great luck with the glue traps with both mice, and last years rat visitors. It's pretty cruel and makes me feel bad, but the bastards gotta go. I did catch one rat in a snap trap, and that was interesting. I thought the wife was up late at night mad about something, and throwing stuff around the kitchen to find a freaking rat trying to remove a big plastic neck tie.

And clean up after yourself and your pets - no dishes in the sink/on the counter/stove etc.

Kind of goes without saying. The wife is a neat freak, much more so than I.

Pick up or put away your pets food if they don't finish it before you go to bed.

Check. The pet food is also stored in large containers that are clamped shut.

Do your best to move far away from the dump!

I am looking at 12-15 miles :) I can not WAIT until I can do so. I am not sure why buying this place ever seemed like a good idea, but 4-5 years ago it seemed like a fast easy way to get into something new, and (relatively) nice. Live and learn.

And if you ask me squirrels are just as disgusting as rats. Tree rats. People see them in the park, think it's cute and feed them, but scream bloody murder if they see a rat.

I am with that camp lol. Next to snakes, I don't think there is much else I hate more than freaking rats. Mice piss me off and I want them gone, but rats are a whole nother story. The first time I saw a rat in the house, I spent two hours trying to find a way to make him dead. I saw him run behind the stove. Opened up the bottom drawer and saw his shadow sitting in the back just looking at me. Bastard. I don't have a huge range of fire power....a spring loaded bb gun that just stings, which would do no good. I actually fired up my air compressor and unloaded a brad nailer at him semi automatic style, while wearing my best stomping boots, and holding a 20oz hammer. He just sat there looking at me. I actually considered my 20 gauge to end the problem, but though the better of firing it in the kitchen, into a gas stove none the less. Did I mention I hate rats? I ended up scaring him which caused it to climb into the side of the stove, inside the paneling where the insulation is, but not in the stove itself. I ran the damn thing on broil for 45 minutes trying to heat him out waint outside with hammer and boots, but no luck. This was all going on between 3-5am. I went to menards at 6am after giving up...and bought some glue traps. I set it so there was no way he could get back out of the stove without stepping in it, and went to bed. Within and hour, to me delight I heard him in the kitchen screaming for his life.

Then again, I don't suppose I would be too happy about squirrels in the house either.

I like living in the middle of nowhere.

I have 4 "rats" in the garage, but they're made of cast iron and aluminum.

"Rat" is slang for a big block Chevy engine. :D

We NORMALLY have about 13(nice number) cats and 4 or 5 dogs who get along with cats outside. About once per month one can be seen chowing down on a mouse. All larger critters(the ones that steal food and dig ankle-breaking craters) get barked into a corner or otherwise spotted and meet Mr. Marlin the .22 launcher. Snakes around here(rattlers and various king snakes) also lower the mouse population.

We HAVE used a powerful BB gun INDOORS with good results. You MUST be an EXCELLENT shot and the placement is critical. Our last one like this was years ago when a large mouse ran under our sofa. On the count of 3 I lifted the sofa, 12 year old son(then) spotted it and made a perfect headshot(NOT a carpeted floor).
