Cover Band Rant.

kansas isn't in the top 40 now, so they would belong in a classic rock environment. haven't heard of the clubs? i find that odd for someone who's been giging "professionally" for as long as you claim.

my genre is metal.

There are very few bars around here that delineate between Classic Rock or Top 40...it's all pretty much the same thing to most people around here. There are also no bands around here that are playing only current Top 40 as the set lists would need to change too frequently to be worth doing.

We do have some bars around here that cater to "metal" and they only hire metal bands. But those bars have a high turnover of owners, and are very low paying (if they pay at all) and poorly attended gigs.

No need to keep questioning my experience. I was born in 1961 and in the 60's my brother's band practiced in our basement playing (you'll love this) Beatles and Beach boys.

I've been playing bass since learning Paul McCartney's lines on old original 45's. My first paying gig was in 1978 and I spent the first ten years out of high school traveling all over the country making a living solely by playing covers of Yes, Rush, Led Zeppelin, Jeff Beck, Pat Travers, etc. as well as some originals in the same vein.

I've been in many originals and cover bands since then over the years.

How long have you been playing?

Um.... Unfortunately, I read the whole thing. :hmm: The BAR OWNER is the one who F-ed up. Period. You can't expect to book a BEATLES band in a biker bar, and it will go well. Plus, you can't expect a BEATLES BAND to start playing metal songs to "entertain the crowd" because the jerk who runs the place booked a BEATLES band in a BIKER BAR! What kind of DUMBA$$ books a BEATLES band in a BIKER BAR???????????? Seriously?????? You're gonna sit here and point fingers at the BAND when the owner booked them in a BIKER BAR??????????? Even if the band sucked (and I'm sure they did), they probably would have gone over fine in a bar where they like BEATLES music! But a BIKER BAR?????????? The bar owner....what an idiot. Think I made my point? :eyebrow:

And while I'm at it, for all of you "original snobs" there are plenty of original bands around here who have messed up my perfectly good night out with friends, so get off YOUR high horse as well. It's not about whether the band played their songs or somebody else's. It's about whether or not they can play, AND whether or not they were in the RIGHT PLACE!

BTW, ............a BEATLES BAND in a BIKER BAR????????? :scowl:

Dude,
I've played many biker bars and runs and have biker friends and yes i have played Beatles song on occasion, not only Beatles songs, but a few and yes bikers do like the Beatles along with most all other classic rock. Bikers are no different then anyone else. Also if you don't like the music leave, find another place to go don't let it ruin your night/week enough to rant about it on the internet. There's other things in life more important.

been playing for 9 years now.

i find it odd, that's all. around here, we have bars and bands that do current top 40 and classic rock. there is a clear definition between the two.

it's painfully obvious you're missing the moral of the story.

Its kind of like an accident that keeps happening. ;)
Over the course of 6+ pages.......it's a like a train that just keeps wrecking. That aside.....I see points on both sides...I started out playing covers in high school, and yeah, we played some gigs that definitely didn't fit the venue, but, hey we were 17 and just stoked to be playing in front of people, and in a BAR!!! no less. But, we didn't piss and moan if we didn't go over so well or make much money. On, the flip side...20 years later & playing all originals, we tend to make sure we're playing appropriate venues, booked with somewhat cohesive bands, and that the payout is gonna be worth the effort. We play hard rock/metal and wouldn't book ourselves at a country/top 40 type joint, but we often have people who are decidedly not metal/biker oriented tell us that they dug our show.

If someone books a Beatles tribute band (or band that does only Beatles covers, whatever they were) they're more to blame. You can't have a go at these guys for doing what they do.

Also, they don't seem to have done anything bad. You've just insulted them on the internet for reasons I can't really see.

Rather what I was thinking - Given that I have nothing but contempt for bikers & biker bars, I think it took some real balls to get up there and do their best in a hostile situation, playing for folks who just want to hear de-tuned saturated guitar and double bass-pedal drums.

Bad gigs happen - I've been on my share of them, and likely will be on a few more before I hang 'em up - is it my fault for getting booked to a crappy gig?

I find it odd that any band would want to play, and any bar would want a band that only plays, Top 40.

Given that it takes roughly 40-45 tunes for a 4 hour gig, and there are only 40 songs in the Top 40 at any given moment, and most barely stay in the Top 40 for longer than a week...that is a huge turnover of material to learn on a regular basis.

Not to mention that out of those 40 songs, the variety of genres that would have to be covered by one band at a Top 40 club is really staggering in it's complexity.

That's what I find odd.

if i was with the same band i'm in now, yes. i like to play. i like the process of jamming out a song. it's fun for me, probably the most fun i have all week. it also doesn't hurt the people in my band are great people to hang out with.

Dude, myself and I'm pretty well convinced the rest of us at TB
