My sympathies: I've had exactly the same problem. Never been trained, but I learned from my brief stint in an amateur choir that I was best suited to 2nd Bass. Not so much of a problem when my blues/rock band does our own stuff, particularly as I write most of the material.

But for covers, I'd second suggestions of the Doors, and a lot of soul/R&B. Blues as well - just listen to a bit of Mud or JLH and you'll see how well deep voices are suited to the genre!

(Unfortunately our drummer's desperate to play more Zeppelin. I appreciate that you can always just shift everything down an octave, but it's kind of hard to voice it to get the same impact when you're singing that much lower...perhaps I'm just not trying hard enough!)
