My acoustic trio Happy Little Trees has an official "set list" for our gigs, but it's really merely a suggestion, as one guitar player pretty much just calls out tunes as we go. An alphabetical list looks something like this:

Ha! I just had a Green Eyed Lady come up on my shuffle play the other day and I was like how did I ever not learn that bassline?! More addictive than crack!

We have a female vocalist but do a lot of stuff that wasn't originally a female vocalist (if all of us feel she can pull it off). From this list we pick ~40 for a typical 4 hour bar gig - so we figure on 10 songs / hr of play time - for shorter gigs we adjust accordingly. There's a lot of variety in there purposely so we try to chose based on what we think the crowd will like or sometimes just based on what we feel like paying (i.e. whim). It's all good and we always have fun so that's all that matters.

Wow - couldn't even get through one page of this thread without seeing that piece of crap Wagon Wheel. That song needs to be banned from being played anywhere at any time. I was excited at all the 90s goodness before it, too. I played in a 90s hard rock/metal/grunge cover band a few years ago, and it was a ton of fun.

Stop Playing "Wagon Wheel"

Wagon steel is the best song ever created, more people should play it.

I'm new to gigging, so this migtht be a stupid question, but: Do you expect to get through all of those in a night? If not, how many do you usually do out of the set list?

No way do we go through all of those. We figure on 10 per hour of gig time. Our usual haunts expect a 4 hour gig so we'll work up 40 songs and then stick to it for the most part but then wing it sometimes (especially towards the end of the gig).
