Covers Better Than The Original

It's not earthly possible to do a Neil Finn song better than Neil Finn. These get pretty darn close, though.

Ok, not technically a cover as Neil Finn is playing. But Paul Kelly is Paul Kelly. And thus probably the only person in the world that can sing this song, and do the song justice while still making it his own.

My contender for the worst major label cover of a great song. I'm still bitter about this. Words can't convey. There is an untold amount of 80s songs to make over-the-top and cheesy cover recordings, with or without irony. Why did they have to choose such an amazing song as It's My Life to diva-destroy? For shame.

Please ignore this, and don't let me thread jack.

A bassist upset about a cover without the original's awesome bassline? Go right ahead.

Back on track: Placebo's cover is excellent, I didn't mention it because I'm not 100% sure it's better than the elusive Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill". Ditto situation for Saint Etienne's cover of Neil Young's "Invalid Link Removed".

I will give the nod to Elvis Costello's cover of "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood".

...going to be plenty of worse examples on the radio in a few weeks (hopefully- I saw my first Xmas ad a month ago).

Uh oh. Now you gone and done it. Xmas opens a whole new world. OK, to get back on OP's intent, here is one cover that is better than the original. And it's a tall order since the original was performed by Julie Andrews, and is a classic. This dude is still performing.

I think Sir Elton did some awesome covers.

I think his “Pinball Wizard” is better than the Who’s, and his “Lucy in the Sky” beats the Beatles version.

Judas Priest’s “Diamonds and Rust” is excellent and Manfred Mann’s “Blinded by the Light” is way better than Springsteen’s.
