It's heresy, but definitely the Bad Plus and their version of Smells Like Teen Spirit. Usually too far out there for most people I recommend it to.

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen interviews with Elvis where he says he prefers the Robert Wyatt version to his own but I love the EC version. He rightly gets praised as a brilliant writer but I think he’s a much better singer than he gets credit for.

My singer likes to do Danny's Song solo at open mic every now and then. Next time he does it we're going to jump up and kick it into this version at the chorus. That should screw with him, and give us a good laugh at the same time.

I think Costello does it good justice. It's my preferred version, a great vocal take. And Bruce Thomas is interesting to listen to.

I think any any cover that SRV did is better than the original version.
But here's one of my all time favorite songs that is better than the original from Texan Roy Orbison.

That is all debatable. Linda may technically have a great voice, but I find her delivery rather stiff, like a script reading, whereas with Roy, with everything he did, there was this aching, longing, emotional presence. Are you going to tell me that SRV bests Hendrix? Technical flash does not equal depth. Accept no substitutes.

Twist and Shout - The Top Notes (corrected from The Isley Brothers) and The Beatles
Mr. Tambourine Man - Bob Dylan and The Byrds

I could go on and on, but that's enough.

All Along The Watchtower, Hendrix covering Dylan. Of course, later on, I saw Dylan do it, he covered the Hendrix version, not his own.
