Oh wow! I didn't know that. Man! I've never ever heard The Cricket's version of I Fought the Law and I am 70 yrs old! Thank-you for the correction and for teaching me.
A little tangential perhaps, but many people nowadays think that Take me to the River was originally done by the Talking Heads. I personally prefer the original version but I like theirs, too.

I'd say any cover of the Rolling Stones is better than the original.

I don't dislike the Stones; I think they write great songs for other bands to cover!

I love covers that draw out the sort of profoundness of the song in a new way. Like Joe Cocker's version of "With A Little Help From My Friends," or Jeff Buckley's version of "Hallelujah." Or, um, The Cardigans' version of "Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath..."

Foghat did a good cover of Take Me To The River.
Yes, the BFF version is actually a cover; the original version by the post-Buddy Holly Crickets. Written by new member Sonny Curtis(who also wrote the Mary Tyler Moore Show theme). Fuller was obviously a Buddy fanboy, and had a lesser hit with a song that Buddy had a hand in writing….
Later on, Greg Kihn took a respectable swing at it…

Heaven and Hell by John Entwhistle. The Who recorded it back in the 60's, then John did his version on a solo album (he wrote the tune). The Who studio recording is pretty good; it was one of my favorites at their concerts, too, but I like John's rendition better.

Obviously I'm very biased to say this, but, to me, these versions recorded a long time ago by my defunct classic rock band are better than the originals.
(Songs recorded with a Danelectro DC Bass, BTW).

Well, in 1974, everybody thought Elton John's version of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" was better; and in 1978, at the height of disco, everybody thought all the remakes of the Beatles songs in the Sgt. Pepper movie were better. I'm not so sure history has shown this to be the case in any event.
