I'm not sure how no one has mentioned this yet, but how about every song/cover form Weird Al Yankovic.
I have to agree with all of these. Metallica made some very odd choices of songs to cover on Garage Inc. Of all of the Skynyrd songs to cover, why "Tuesdays Gone"? There are many other great tunes they could have covered (except "Freebird" of course)
There are also a lot of great Blue Oyster Cult songs,so why cover "Astronomy"?

And there's a few more that are semi decent, but most Beatles covers blow chunks.
I saw Dylan play 'Something' about 15 years ago, with just him and Tony Garnier on upright. It was an incredible version. His old mate would have been so proud.
However, my gold medal for BEST Beatles cover, goes to Laibach for their interpretation of the entire 'Let It Be' album. Slovenian Industrial Metal. Has to be heard to be believed. And no, not an attempt to be hipster cool with something so-bad-it's-good. If you know Laibach, you'll know why this album is great

This thread is like a massive gory pile-up on the freeway. You know you it's a bad idea to slow down and look but you can't help yourself. I really wish I could un-hear some of that.
Oh, and seeing as how the Beatles and Metallica have featured heavily in this thread....how about some Beatallica? (YouTube is your friend)

Actually there's dozens of great Beatles covers that I know of, and no doubt dozens more that I've never heard. The greatest songs are the best ones to cover, after all, and great singers/bands tend to cover great songs. Sometimes they stuff them up, but not always.
I do not consider Weird Al Yankovic versions as serious cover songs since they are intentional parodies with different lyrics too.

I always thought Robert Van Winkle's version of Under Pressure was pretty lame.........
Suprised nobody mentioned Motley Crue's version of "Smokin' in the Boys Room" (the Brownsville Station). Not that they changed it up much (other than inserting bandmember names), but the thing sounds like it was recorded on your buddies Tascam 4-track cassette. Actually, I've heard better sounds come out of a 4-track cassette.....and I liked the Crue back then.
