Cracked Sadowsky

Some good points here aside from the trolling

Is it the One? That dictates a choice. Is it not, return

Fodera folks response probably same as Sadowsky, return it to get it touched up or walk away

Doesn't seem all that dramatic, it happens and stand up Mfgs do the the right thing

Someone said earlier to give Roger a call. That's what I would do. I used to drive him crazy with stuff like what's happening to you. I liken it to the story of the Princess and Pea. That being said when it comes to taking care of customers there is no one better.

The easiest thing to do is this: Email Roger. I will bet money that he'll tell you exactly what we've said, that it happens and it may happen with another one of his basses down the line. If he does, then go with his word and keep the bass.

Just checked my twelve month old Sadowsky MV4 - super tight neck joint and no cracks. Finish is still perfect, in fact it is the best finished and set up bass I have ever purchased new. And all that after having to survive a flight and climate change to New Zealand.
All that said though, this thread strikes me as being somewhat unfair on Roger. Regardless of whether or not a minor finish crack is a concern it seems premature and unreasonable to post about it before either the dealer or Roger has a chance to respond or rectify the situation.

My NYC has the exact same finish crack on its neck pocket (as well as several other dings and dents) and hasn't caused me any trouble at all, but mine was made in the late 90's and I have no idea if it happened before I got ahold of it. I wouldn't worry about the resale value decreasing that much due to the finish crack, anyone that's buying a Sadowsky on the used market will almost certainly not care about small finish cracks because once you get to this level of instruments from ANY maker/shop you're paying for a very specified sound in a bass.

Are you sure that this finish crack wasn't there when you bought the bass, or the bass didn't fall somehow after you bought it? I find it very hard to believe that this finish issue just "appeared" one day without any drastic change in temperature, fall while in a case/gigbag, setup, etc.

I've seen that exact thing on a ton of high-end bolt-on basses. It's exactly what everyone has been saying. I wouldn't worry about it at all. It has no structural impact and isn't something to worry about. Even if Roger refinished the whole bass for you, there's no guarantee it wouldn't happen again -- or happen on another bass.

After a few gigs, you won't even notice it!

Wow. To sum up:

  • These finish cracks are common on instruments with good tight neck pockets, high-end boutiques included
  • They are superficial, having zero effect on the instrument
  • They might have some effect on resale value
  • It's OK to contact the manufacturer and/or vendor about return/repair
  • It's also OK to not worry about them at all (FWIW I wouldn't)

OP, what's your decision?

It's clearly a major flaw in the bass. I'd get rid of it and cut your losses.

...by get rid of it, I really mean you can send it to me. Because I'm a nice guy, I'm willing to cover 1/2 of the shipping cost.

Sure...........it also goes without saying that you would be happy to pay full price for the bass.

If so, I am happy to pay 1/2 transport.

I just want to return it now.

I have four other fenders, none of which have cracked necks

This one doesn't have a cracked neck, either - at least, not in those pics - that crack is in the body, not the neck. And likely just a finish crack. But if you're not happy, for whatever reason, by all means, take it back.

Probably won't work as it truly is a crack and not a surface scratch. Frequently attributed to "too tight pocket" but other variable come into play including the varying expansion / contraction compression of the various wood masses. Woods moves, certain finishes do not. The clear coat on my Zon Vinny did the same thing with no resulting loss of integrity.

Perhaps he was merely suggesting that a bit of wanking might take OP's mind off the crack. ;)

That's because Fenders, at least in my experience, don't have neck pockets that are as tight. Most of them have had some sort of a gap though I have seen them here and there with finish cracks. Neck pocket gap is debated as to whether it's good or bad but of course it's good because this can't happen. But like I said, it's common. I'm just saying you can return this one but there is no guarantee that it won't happen with the next bass another 11 days or 11 years down the line and it has nothing to do with Sadowsky Metro's quality.

I'm not so sure about that - if the gap results in incomplete coupling between the neck and the body, it will affect sound and particularly sustain. Again, this is really more of a cosmetic and personal preference issue, but me, I'd take a tiny finish crack nobody but you will ever see over any possibility of diminished sound. But if OP wants it perfect, he should have it, since that's what he paid for. That's the difference between buying new and used.

Yeah I agree, though some people do debate the affect of a slight gap. Either way, a gap won't result in a cracked neck pocket.

Agreed. Though I also agree with a previous comment about OP and OCD. (Being rather familiar with the issue myself.) :)
