Early last week I saw an ad in CL for a bass and guitar for Saturday night. I responded and was told it was to play 5 or 6 songs, one of which would be The Beatles Birthday Song. It would pay $100. He said he would be the drummer. He said he hasn't played in 15 years, but 6 months ago bought himself a Roland electronic drum set and wants to get back into playing. Yeah, sounds too good to be real, right? But, I said I would do it. Then he posts back and asks if I know any guitar players. He has had no response. I do some calling around and find a guy I played with last year who is not already booked.
When the drummer posted his address, I knew he had money. It is in an exclusive neighborhood near White Rock Lake in Dallas. We go set up and did a run through and was surprised to find that the drummer really could play and was obviously a pro.
The show was set to start at 9:45, but the guests didn't get to the house until about 10:30 from the dinner party at a nearby restaurant. When the birthday boy came in, we started with the Birthday song and ended up playing a few extra songs we hadn't even rehearsed together. We sounded good and the guests loved it. As we were packing up, the drummer payed us and added a $20 tip for each of us.
It was a very fun gig. Also, thanks to Susan and Candice for all the dancing. It kept me entertained.
And we are talking about getting together a 3 piece to do some gigs. We will use the name the drummer coined for Saturday night's show: ULE (Unbelievably Low Expectations). I like it.
Sorry, no photos. I didn't have a camera with me and I had left my phone in the truck.
