Craigs List Pickup Gig

Early last week I saw an ad in CL for a bass and guitar for Saturday night. I responded and was told it was to play 5 or 6 songs, one of which would be The Beatles Birthday Song. It would pay $100. He said he would be the drummer. He said he hasn't played in 15 years, but 6 months ago bought himself a Roland electronic drum set and wants to get back into playing. Yeah, sounds too good to be real, right? But, I said I would do it. Then he posts back and asks if I know any guitar players. He has had no response. I do some calling around and find a guy I played with last year who is not already booked.
When the drummer posted his address, I knew he had money. It is in an exclusive neighborhood near White Rock Lake in Dallas. We go set up and did a run through and was surprised to find that the drummer really could play and was obviously a pro.
The show was set to start at 9:45, but the guests didn't get to the house until about 10:30 from the dinner party at a nearby restaurant. When the birthday boy came in, we started with the Birthday song and ended up playing a few extra songs we hadn't even rehearsed together. We sounded good and the guests loved it. As we were packing up, the drummer payed us and added a $20 tip for each of us.
It was a very fun gig. Also, thanks to Susan and Candice for all the dancing. It kept me entertained.
And we are talking about getting together a 3 piece to do some gigs. We will use the name the drummer coined for Saturday night's show: ULE (Unbelievably Low Expectations). I like it.
Sorry, no photos. I didn't have a camera with me and I had left my phone in the truck.

I like it too. I was in a band for a while that was called "Delusions of Adequacy", same idea! Sounded like a nice gig. You'll be surprised how much work a trio can get, especially with electronic drums (volume control!).
Love some 3 piece. Fewer egos, easier logistics, more gigs, and the electronic drums are great.

sounds like a really fun gig - and love the band name :D

i was thinking as i sent this thread to my husband that most people would have passed on this and missed a great time.
I almost did, but being the curious type, I decided to check into it. He asked me to find a guitar player because none had responded. The guy that played the gig with me said he had seen the ad but passed on it. He was really glad he took it.

I like that name. You can shorten it to DOA!

It was DOA on a poster, and I think the audience expected a death metal band ... boy, were they surprised when the banjo started playing! :D

LOL, there is a Canadian Punk band that goes by DOA...depending on when, your poster probably coincided with one of their many last tours ever...

As repulsed as I am by the thought of having to do it, I am hereby obligated to inquire:
What is the best banjo for metal?

EDIT: To be honest, with Berkley Breathed reviving Bloom County, I think the only relevant best __________ for metal question anymore is "What is the best tuba for metal?"
