Craigslist Bass Player

Reminds me of an ad I made the mistake of answering. This guy's ad stated he was a guitarist, mid-40's, looking to start a serious project, and listed some musical influences. Since I'm in that same age group and had similar interests, I answered, thinking we could get this off the ground.

But then I found out that while he indeed was in his 40's, being unemployed was his career choice, and he still lived at home with his mother. And needed a ride everywhere. And his 'gear' consisted of a 40W practice amp and a borrowed guitar.

He said he knew a drummer, and that the three of us should get together. But what he couldn't understand is that both the drummer and myself had families, kids, and oh yeah...jobs. He got so pissed that we couldn't practice at noon on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, that he eventually ran another ad, this time looking for people in their 40's who didn't have all those obligations like work and family. Good luck with that one, buddy.

I've been spending some time on the Los Angeles craigslist looking for a band to work with when I move there.

My favorites are the guys who have a list a mile long of what they don't want, like some sort of aryan nation of musicians. Or the ads that say 'Must look the part...' or 'Must have tattoos' gotta love L.A.

Talent is, at most 20% of the equation, these days. Blame the rise of the music video format and the internet. It hasn't really been about how an artist sounds since before these things came along. Of course, you're gonna have those who insist on the superficial matches as a first priority.

I e-mailed the guy and tried to get a little bit more information out of him. Well, the guy exists.

He looks a little crazy. I'd be concerned about him coming after ya when he finds this thread. Do you watch forensic files... or CSI... people kill for less ya know. Just puttin it out there. :)
