Craigslist fender. Opinions.

I'm certainly no expert, BUT, from a players perspective, it doesn't seem like a very good deal. Unless you can do all the "fixing up" that needs doing yourself, it'll cost alot to get it up and running. You'll be near or above $1500 by the time it's finished.

I disagree with a few of the folks here. While the jazz pickup is indeed off center, it is in no way unplayable like that. Buy it, put a new nut on it, and play the hell out of it. Don't worry about the rest of the "issues".

That nut looks like it was replaced once already. Doesn't look like a standard Fender nut. Of course with all the other work done to it, with the pickup route and electronics, there's probably not much left of the original bass except the body and neck. Tuners don't even look quite right for the era.

Oh, by the time anyone responded to his posting anyways there was already 10 emails hitting that guy from people within a 3 hour radius. 15 minutes in and this bass was probably gone. Ok...maybe not that fast on this one, but craigslist sucks in the sense that if something good comes along, it's usually gone and we all don't even know it.

In any case, I'm no expert by any means but that finish looks strange for a vintage 73. Maybe its just me, and maybe I haven't seen enough. It does remind me of my '75 Reissue jazz though, so maybe I'm just over-criticizing. Also, those bridge cover holes aren't even close to looking factory made IMO. Weird the pickguard wasn't removed and pictures taken. He took ultra close pictures of the strap peg but no internal pictures? Those finish cracks make me wary of the life the bass has lived. I'd say it's a relatively good deal. First hunch has me thinking ebay would probaby put this one around $1500.

Oh...and is that a name carved on the neckplate?

Nut is wrong.

Tuners are right.

Pickguard is right.

Body is right.

Pickups are wrong.

Bridge is right.

Knobs look right.

Strap buttons are wrong.

Output jack is wrong.

Easily worth the sum of its' parts, even in todays market.

IMO, of course.

The body is original, and original finish. Same with the neck. It's a shame the bridge pickup was routed off-center.
It is a P from the 71-73 timeframe.

But the flattened out 19th and 20th frets indicate this fretboard has the ski-ramp flip. The best fix for ultimate tone would be a board leveling with refret. But you can simply replace the nut and just play it as is.

That's what I figured. I'd just tear the thing apart and sell it in pieces. I've no compassion for someone else's mod work.:hiding:
