well the reason I was trying to keep it under $200 for everything (bass, amp, a few little goodies) was because it was his parents that are paying for it and for all they know he might not even play it for more then a year or so. he has been trying a few other instruments from woodwinds to brass and it seems like the reason he wants to play the bass is because he has some friends that already started guitar. they are only playing on little "bedroom" amps too so I was just trying to get something to get his feet wet with and see where it goes from there. he isn't going to be doing any gigs or shows anytime soon and depending on where he does lessons he might have to be carrying that thing around with him.
another option is that I am trying to fix my old Yamaha bass head that if it isn't going to cost too much I can just pick some 4 ohm cab that would work out nice for someone starting but would still be enough power to last him awhile.
