Crest Audio CA9 Now I understand.

Nothing wrong or unsafe about a set of thick copper #6 spades with lots of insulation around them.i used a tight mechanical connection as well as Silver Solder.

I dont really care for Banana Plugs. I may even mount a Speakon in a bigger rack later and go back to the Spades on the 5 ways.

The CA9 is an absolute Fire Breathing Beastly Dragon.

I can not turn my SWR Marcus Miller Preamp Master Output Level up above 9 oclock for fear of absolutely blowing the speakers into the next room.

Well... looks like you bridge yours into a 4x10? That's a TON of power! I use just one channel into my Berg NV610 and get all the power I need and then some.:cool:

To answer someone else's question, I put my CA9 in a separate rack:

Yes it is. I suppose I could get by with one Channel of the CA9 easy but Brideged adds unreal amounts of Headroom. I may be running it in Stereo before it's over if I can scrape up the Funds for another Goliath IV 4x10.:D:bassist:

I can only imagine what that would sound like. I would actually be decreasing wattage from 2,000 to 1,800 but the increase in Cones would make it up and then some I would think.

May I recommend a 4 Ohm Big Bertha to go with your 4 Ohm Goliath IV?

I like the copper spades... How do you know which is + and which is -?

I would think if you mixed them up there would be some serious phase cancellation with the other instruments.

It really does not matter. The only time Phasing Counts is when you have two cabs and one is out with the other. I do have them marked though.

I really don't want to rain on your parade...but:

I know you are in love with the massive wumph of this system, but your margin for error, bridging the CA9 into 4 ohms, is not very big into your Goliath IV. One "oopsie" and you are in for a bunch of drivers and horn. Simply put, the 2000 watts that a CA9 can-reliably-deliver into a 4 ohm load in bridged mode-is an asinine amount of power to dump on your Goliath IV, which is rated at "only" (!) 800 watts. If you are not even pushing the CA9, then you could have accomplished the same goal with a less powerful amplifier. Or at least, go ahead, get another Goliath IV 4 ohm cab and run the CA9 in dual mono. That is safe...and will give you an incredible amount of ooomph!

So your saying you have tried it?

The Goliath IV pretty much takes whatever you can throw into it. It is way under rated. I've been running a 2600 watt, 2400 watt, and 2000 watt into it for a while now without issue.

I don't believe they make them anymore, but they can be found on craigslist and the like. I've always been quite envious of them, but I don't have a good 4 ohm cab to match with it.

As a matter of fact, my dream rig is a Goliath Sr, a Big Bertha, and a Mesa 400+, all running parallel in gorgeous 2 ohm glory.

droooooooooool.

An excellent feature with these amps I might add. Gives them an advatage over the competition.

Gotta say, I'm glad to see that you fired it up and re-posted about the wonderfull feeling of playing with oodles of headroom. Ever since I got my rig , I have felt the same. The few friends I have turned on to the big power, bought, but didn't buy enough, and have regreted it. Nothing beats the big power. Mine is the Carvin DCM2500. 850 per channel at 4 ohms, and is a short 10.5 inches deep. Thats the only reason, it isn't a CA-9. I think it's about as good, IMHO. My saying to others is, it feels so good to play through, it'll about make 'ya pee your pants!

It's a good amp, every bit as good as many others. It has a lot of gain, so there's a lot of "I only have to turn it up to 9 o'clock" appeal to it.

If you learn the concept of gain matched double blind testing, it can tell you a lot.

I'm pretty clueless about pre/power amp modular bass rigs, but +1 and the same thing goes for integrated bass heads. There is a strong psychological drive to feel that bass heads with linear master volume pots (Markbass, Genz, GK, Thunderful, Eden, SWR, Mesa, etc., etc.) are louder than those that use audio taper pots that don't approach full volume until WAY into their travel range (Glockenklang, TecAmp, EA iAmp, etc.).

I fall into the same trap comparing my Markbass heads to my TecAmp Puma, for example. Both amp lines seem to reach a similar 'maximum clean volume' when cranked, but the linear taper (if I have that term correct) MB heads do it at a master setting at about noon (with optimal 'just below input clip' pre gain), while the audio taper Puma doesn't reach full volume with the same input setting until 3 o'clock or even more. I literally have to force myself to not think that the MB heads are 'more powerful':rollno::D

For $50 you can have an authorized tech mod the gain on a QSC PLX to get that same "its only on 2" hi gain wonderfulness.

When you think about gain matching, think about comparing two basses that are not tuned exactly the same. The one tuned lower sounds darker and deeper, so you buy it. Then you tune it up and it sounds just like the other bass. Or A/Bing basses with different strings or setups. If you want to make an informed choice you need to have a level playing field. If you don't care about a level playing field and want to buy what makes you feel the best that is fine, but recommending it to others based on that might not be fair to them.

Guys, all I'll say is be careful. It was my rack setup with QSC, Ashdown pre, tuner, lighted power cond. that put me in the hospital with 2 discs being replaced. For all those Crest lovers, I'll just say, use 2 racks and don't be afraid to ask a band member for help (especially going up stairs). However, I bet these rigs are killer!
