Cricket World Cup 2007

OK so now when I tell you we sent a second-string team to NZ for the Chappell-Hadlee series, will everyone please listen?

Oh and Mo, did you see the Rugby League Test? :)
I always agreed with you about the second string team, especially without Ponting, Symonds and Gilchrist.

No, I didn't get to see the league test - probably a good thing considering the 30-6 hammering we got.

Seems the coaches have a distinct dislike for each other!

Mo

FWIW that scoreline looks harsher than it should. The score blew out at the end but for a young side, the Kiwi's did to that badly. If they gel a bit, they could be a force at the world cup next year.

OK. We now know who's playing the semi's.

Sri Lanka plays NZ on the 24th.

Australia plays S.Africa on the 25th April. That's ANZAC DAY, so emotions will be running as high for the Aussies as they were on St Pats day for the Irish. S. Africa have NO CHANCE!!!!!!!

Hey Mo do NZ consider ANZAC Day a special day too?

Hey Mo do NZ consider ANZAC Day a special day too?

Absolutely! Public Holiday for starters, Dawn parade down ath the local Cenetaphs, more younger people than ever becoming involved in paying homage to the fallen and those who served, shops closed 'til after 12 noon, RSA's ( RSL's to you ) dish out free tipples to those who served, Poppy Day - everyone weras one, .....the list goes on and on.

It's one of the best bonds of comradeship between two like-minded countries that I can think of and brings tears to my eyes when I consider how us Aussies and Kiwis have stuck together so well in times of trouble.

It is SO special.

Mo

I thought so. The semi's are timed very nicely for Austr and NZ to draw on the passion of Anzac day. Look out SL and SA!

Crunch time for us Kiwis at 2:00am tomorrow morning.

I don't have Sky, but I'm going around to one of The Void's ( our originals group ) member's house at about 5:00 am and watch it on his box - we'll zip out for the dawn parade service - then back for the second innings.

Mo

SA are doomed.
I reckon even with Murali, the Sri Lankans are gonna be pushin poo up a hill.
Well - besides the public holiday rehearsals I'll be doin - and hittin the piss with a meat-pie in hand - I'll be catchin the footy and some cricket on the box.
Does that satisfy anyone wondering about the Aussie chiche?

One thing I'm curious about - the Meat-Pie seems to be a bit of an UK/Aussie thing, but everywhere else in the world it's an oddity - are they in NZ too?

OK Half time in the SL V NZ Semi and SL got 289/5 from their 50 overs. According to Cricinfo,

"So that's been a fine performance from Sri Lanka, after choosing to bat at Sabina Park. Mahela Jayawardene's knock, a lesson in pacing the innings, will go down as one of the great one-day innings and was a sort of effort that one associated with Aravinda de Silva. New Zealand started off well with the ball but some sloppy fielding and poor death bowling (when they conceded 102 in the last ten) did them in. Even someone like Shane Bond, who has had a fine tournament so far, leaked 59 in his ten overs."

I'm off to dawn service. Good Luck NZ. You'll have to play well but you can do it!

Meat pies are also part of the NZ constitution as well. In fact they've just had the Natioanl Champiomships for pie making in NZ and there's some very serious competitions for NZ's best meat pie.

However, for the average punter, meat pies here are just likes sausages - a surprise package!

Thanks Pete - but as we now know, NZ lets its poor last ten over effort contaminate its batting!

At one stage we were 103/2 which was even on par with the DL Par rate!

Sri Lanka played well and deserved the win, but I thought we could have at least made them work much harder for it.

I've got to say that NZ put on a pathetic half arsed performance given what was at stake!

Some interesting umpiring decisions and why no-one ever challenged that dropped - yes dropped! - caught and bolwed by Murili is beyond me. You could even tell by the look on Murili's face that he didn't quite grasp it, yet he continued on to claim it as a fair catch. Well, with a bent arm delivery you can achieve even a dropped catch. That's not sour grapes either, I've always considered his method of bowling cheating.

Anmyhow, well done Sri Lanka and hope the Aussies do well in the finals.

Mo

I watched the match yesterday - Jayawardene's innings was fantastic - one of the best batting performance's I've seen!

I'm supporting them all the way!!

The umpiring was mentioned and it was pretty terrible - so two Sri Lankan batsmen were given out consecutively that were blatantly not out! So - one was given LBW when it was clearly a big edge and then LB when all the replays showed it missing the stumps by miles! :hmm:

Oh well - the BBC described it as a muted world cup blighted by tragedy and the cloud of match-fixing etc.

The last two games I've seen have been great games - Eng vs WI and Sl vs NZ....

But only the Eng WI game has had a big enthusaistic crowd and the real "atmosphere", in the whole tournament! :(

Overall a damp squib!

Yeah and the Australian tour last year was a damp squib too... until you started winning. You changed your tune pretty quickly then, and you'd do the same now if England played a half decent tournament.

Well it's Australia though to the Final to play Sri Lanka in a re-match of the 1996 final. Justice prevails in a sense. These are the teams who have played the best cricket during the tournament and they deserve to be there. If anyone can beat Australia on current form, it's SL.

South Africa were dreadful today and simply do not deserve their No 1 world ranking. Since when has "Attack Glenn McGrath" ever been a workable plan? He may be old but he's shown time and time again he has the brains, the skill, and the accuracy to make anyone look silly. He did it yet again today and quite frankly, there was never any doubt he would.

SL are going to have to come up with a better plan if they're going to win the final.

Jesus, it's true what they say about you Aussies having a chip on each shoulder, you're so bloody cynical

I think the whole world could agree that this has not been the carnival atmosphere we were all expecting from the carribean, probably due to the tickets being too expensive for locals...but for god's sake would you lighten up!

Maybe, but pffftt....you English can be so darn negative. Last World cup you complained about some of the games being played in Zimbabwe, now you're complaining about the carnival atmosphere. It's the World Cup for pete's sake. It's about the game of cricket, not ferris wheels and fairy floss :)

SL are going to have to come up with a better plan if they're going to win the final.

Well if Jayawardene plays like he did in the semi - no risks at the start, then incredible acceleration at the end - that should work.

Also - nobody seems to be able to live with Malinga and Murali...?

I'm surprised that a lot of teams have had trouble with Brad Hogg - I can see the Sri Lankans playing him with relish!

For me the key is whether they can stand up to the pace of Tait and not collapse - if so, they can win! :)

Yes - it not even that we missed a carnival - any atmosphere at all would have been nice! :p

It took Lara's retirement to inspire people and then we got one good game - but it's not really enough, out of a whole tournament!
