Cricket World Cup 2007

What? If the chappel Hadlee series has taught me anything, it's that team selection has absolutely nothing to do with the psychology of the game.

OK - but that's not quite what I was saying, maybe I wasn't clear.
I'm not saying it's OK to drop a game intentionally - but it's OK to see how an underpowered bowling attack will perform, given that the 2nd tier bowlers of Symonds and Clarke will have to bowl well. Also - to see how a batting weighted attack will perform (provided you win the toss and bat first;) )
We cool?

It's a shame about LARA - he's such a champion.
I remember seeing an interview with him a while back, and he was effectively saying he didn't believe he deserved a spot in the team after a rough spot of form, only that he'd take the field if the team wanted him.
Kinda moving to see a legend of the game to be so humble.

So I'm guessin the final four are shaping up to;
Australia
Sri Lanka
New Zealand
England / South Africa. Am I right here?

Whilst NZ has won every game so far, it hasn't really been up against any of the heavyweights yet.

Sri Lanka drew their ODI series here 2 - 2 and they have played us so often lately that they know our strengths and weaknesses very well.

I hope NZ isn't in complacnecy mode otherwise they could find themselves missing out in the semis.

OK I see you're point, but my point is that doing this during a World Cup competition isn't exactly perfect timing. We've had 4 years for these types of experiments.

I guess we've had enough injuries lately to require some fast re-organising of strategies. I just wish the selectors would look for more obvious and logical solutions, and his name is Stuart Clarke!

Oh dear - not a good Friday 13th here so far!

NZ gets 220 odd runs and Sri Lanka are just about there in the run chase. Only 4 wickets down and just 9 runs required :crying:

I had a hunch we'd struggle against the better teams beacuse the other games were just a bit too easy - plus there are some ominous signs in our batting order.

OK now that we've seen what Ireland is "really" capable of, is anyone else becoming more and more suspicious that Pakistan MUST have thrown that match. Seriously, I watch the game against Australia and I've seen schoolboy under 15 teams with more talent than the Irish team. How the hell did they win a game at all?

And Blardy Shaun Tait! Bowls 3 excellent overs, then his 4th is 11 balls. That's so typical of him and it frustrates the hell out of me. Ireland scored at 3 and over, but Tait went for more than a run a ball......

...I SHOULD be confident in Australia's chances given we're the only team not to lose a game so far, but I'm not. Too many potential holes and weakness which so far have not been explioted by the opposition. Once we play a team that works out how to do that, we could be in trouble.

....and most likely Bob Woolmer had his suspicions ( or more ) , voiced his disapproval and threatened to spill the beans - that would fit!

We have a bowler like Tait - his name is Mason!

Look, every team in the series looks like it will get the speed wobbles at any given moment, except for perhaps Sri Lanka now, so I don't see Aussie's chances being any less for that.

They'll be in the finals I reckon. They have too many good players to drop the rankings at this stage.

So they played badly against the best team in the world? Big deal! Against Australia, and in their current form, I won't expect England to score more than 150. The thing about the smaller teams is they can have amazing swings in performance - from scoring 200 one day to less than 100 the next, that's just the nature of the affiliate nations.

Are Sri Lanka fair dinkum about this world cup or not? What's the point of leaving Muralie, Vaas, and Malinga out of the team that got crushed by Australia today? OK Malinga's not 100% fit but if the other two need a rest, give it to them against Ireland. How the hell does "a preference for an easy game before the semi finals" benefit the SL team in any way?

I think what they're really looking at is keeping secrets.
Tactically - especially for the bowlers - I think they're trying to keep their tactics, for getting the aussies out, a bit of a mystery.
I honestly don't see why tho....................

As to Tait - I think he's great. Nothings better than watching a bowler who doesn't even know where he's bowling to.:)
I'm just waiting for the accidental (but inevitable) BEAN ball that hurtles through the air at 160kph.

I'm just waiting for the accidental (but inevitable) BEAN ball .......
Tait has a delivery that resembles Rowan Atkinson? :)

I can't watch Tait bowl. I really can't. He went for more than a run-a-ball AGAIN yesterday, which only bugs me because the excuse they keep offering up for not selecting Stuark Clarke is that in ODI's he's supposedly too expensive???????????????

On a positive note, how good is Bracken nowadays! And Grandpa McGrath is still showing em how it's done...........

Not many Aussies would get to have a photo of them with one of the Australian Crcketing heros in the same frame!
Then you'll probably like this one too:-

At the time Brett Lee was out of the Aussie side with that bad ankle injury. Actually he'd recovered and was ready to play, but Kasperwitz (sp?) was in the side and taking wickets so Brett was having trouble getting his spot back.

During that time, he was known to turn up and have a beer or 10 at a bar in Sydney at which we had a regular Sunday night gig. He took a liking to our band (due largely to our singer's voice) and eventually asked me if it would be OK if he got up and played a few songs on bass. Who am I to say no to an Aussie Icon! He did this 5 or 6 times and we haven't seen him since he regained selection.

How's his bass playing? Not as good as his bowling :)

The Ponting shot was a sheer fluke. I got a phone call from my wife saying she was doing some shopping and Ricky Ponting is there signing copies of his book. The shopping centre in question is right across the road from were I work, so I dropped everything and ran over there.

That was taken just before the Ashes 06-07 series started. I could tell by the look in Punter's eye that we were going to win that ashes series. He didn't say it but even before a ball was bowled, he knew it was going to be 5-0......

Wow Pete, not just Brett Lee but alos the Skipper.

You realise that he ( being the Aussie 1st XI Captain ) is the second most important man in Australia - the PM being the only one in front of him! ...naa you already knew that.

Well done.

So Brett plays bass...well isn't life full of surprises! :)

When the Windies were here...oooohhh about late 90's, I was at a one dayer and couldn't believe my ears, the radio announcer casually said "there's Curtley Ambrose noodling around playing away on his bass ( unplugged of course )" and sure enough - he was. His team was batting and being 11th drop, he had some time to kill!

He took his bass on tour with him! And....had it at the game!

Any more gems there? :hyper:

F a a a a a a a r k !

.....a power-packed Australian batting performance during a thumping 215-run triumph against New Zealand in Grenada. Australia, clearly the best team in the tournament, were two steps away from claiming a hat-trick of World Cups and now travel to St Lucia to take on South Africa in the second semi-final.

It was a dominant, almost vengeful, Australian effort, one which would have helped erase painful memories of the 3-0 whitewash in the recent Chappell-Hadlee series. Hayden shone the brightest but Ricky Ponting and Shane Watson chipped in with valuable fifties.........

I'm having a bad day!

OK so now when I tell you we sent a second-string team to NZ for the Chappell-Hadlee series, will everyone please listen? Crikey they kept refering to the "recent 3-0 NZ victory in NZ" during the radio commentary as though it mattered (I had an out-of-town gig and listen to the game for the long drive home). It was annoying the crap out of me. It didn't matter! We left out best players at home!

(Sigh) OK now I've got that off my chest.......I just hope Austr don't falter in the Finals like we did against England a few months ago. A dominant performance in the rounds is nice, but the finals matter more.

EDIT:- Oh and Mo, did you see the Rugby League Test? :)

So you admit Aussie cricket has no depth. I think that does matter quite alot. Without key players, Australia will loss.

My money is on Australia to win the cup by the way, as I said from the start.

Hmm, I partly agree with you. We have "some" depth as shown by our current performances despite losing several players through injury even before the world cup started.

But if you're implying we don't have the depth of years gone by, you're right. Remember when we used to field an Australia A team for our ODI's as well as a proper Australian team. It was effectively a Team of players who for whatever reason weren't in the top squad, and it still used to flog whatever team was touring. They even used to give the top squad a good contest when they played each other. Now THAT was depth! I don't think we'd be able to do that at the moment.........
