Another vote for the obvious King's X. Also Cry of Love -- fantastic debut album.
Toy Matinee. They only put out one album, but it was amazing front to back, full of well-crafted pop songs. They had a minor hit with this track:
Follow For Now. An Atlanta band that was unfairly compared to Living Colour (their sounds were very different). There was more punk and funk to their sound. They, too, only put out one album.

For me it would definitely be Cry Of Love, King's X and Little Feat...

king crimson was plenty big in their day..I'd like to say King Crimson, but no, they never should have made it big. Almost did once or twice, almost destroyed them. Some things are best when not over shared.

I always wondered why Missing Persons didn't make it much bigger than they did. They had radio hits and MTV videos as well as major street cred with musicians being alumni of working with Frank Zappa. Terry Bozzio is/was very well thought of as a drummer and his wife, Dale, is/was a one of a kind original. What's not to like?
Another one: Soul Asylum. Their Grave Dancers Union album is fantastic.
You and I must be the same person . . . with a hearty appetite for Power Pop!! I'll add The Semantics/Owsley, and Rooney into this list.
One of my favorites. Saw him twice. A tortured genius. So sad he couldn't deal with the demons.

I saw him play Steely Dan's "My Old School" live with a 4 piece. He covered all the horn and guitar parts on guitar. My jaw was hanging the entire time.
His singing and songwriting were top-notch. His amazing guitar playing was just icing on the cake...and what sweet icing it was!
