Not sure how commercially successful he is, but Buddy Whittington (guitar, vocals) is vastly underrated. Give a listen to Young & Dumb (song quality is intentionally low-fi until 0:35).

+infinity! I've seen them live (coming here this month!) more times than I can count and they have ALWAYS been awesome. Tight, tight, tight, fantastic vocal harmonies, etc. Dave is 65 and he sings and plays and good as he did in the 80s. Consummate professionals.

As is "Coax Me". They are a hugely talented group, with all four members participating as song-writers.
Missing from this list...UNCLE TUPELO, 4 great albums inspiring a new genre..alt country. Founding members broke up and started Wilco and Son Volt
Prong shows were a lot of fun, back in the day.
They play pretty much in the SE US. I just saw where they are doing vocals in the studio now. Hopefully something new in the not too distant future.
There are so many who put out that one killer album and then struggled to put out another full album of goodness. Sure there's a song here or there, but not the full album of awesome like their national public debut. Sometimes the hardest thing to do is follow a breakthrough first album.
Kings X is a perfect example in my opinion. Gretchen Goes to Nebraska was f'ing brilliant. But, all the rest of their albums just don't hold up as well.
