Crispy Cherry

First off, loving this build and the docs - learning lots, so thanks!

This is a very basic question, but what kind of glue did you use? I just routed a bass too deep and need to toss a little plug in. First I need to figure out how to get a good template to route the body a bit better and cut a plug that'll fit nicely, but after that I'm not entirely sure what glue to use. Due to the position, I don't have clamps that I can position, so (I think) wood glue is out unless I glue it and toss a couple screws in, which I'd rather not do. Epoxy is probably a better bet? Toss it on, place in the plug, press down for a minute and let it cure over night?
Polyvinyl acetate otherwise know pva (wood glue) is gonna be your best bet for 99.9% of wood gluing applications. Get the most basic stuff you can find. Here in North America we like our titebond original (not the water proof stuff, that's for outdoor basses;))

Generally speaking If the joint is good and the glue is applied evenly, all that is needed is to hold the two pieces together, ie there's no need for clamping pressure to achieve a good bond. The reasons we clamp are to hold things together not to apply great force. That said there are exceptions but that's a lot to go into here.

Also worth mentioning, is that two pieces joined correctly on their flat/quartered grain won't break along the glue if stressed. The wood will, because a pva joint in wood is typically going to be much stronger than the wood around it.
This happens because it gets absorbed into the wood and creates an all around more dence material.

As for a plug it's kinda a tricky thing imo. You want a snug friction fit around the perimeter which usually means you can only insert it once. Generally this is a no no in woodworking as we want to test our joints before applying glue. That said if you get a snug fit and than add glue (pva) to that equation the only clamping you'll need is to get it in as it'll now be an even tighter fit. For this though you don't need a clamp you can use a mallet. Once a tight fitting plug is glued it's not coming out, no clamps required. Again it's a tricky thing if you've never done it before and as such I'd say try it on a test piece first, maybe try it a few times. Get comfortable with it first. Also being as this is what it is I'll say measure twice cut once. :laugh: (it's ok we all mess this up now and than)
 
I'd guess the average gallon can of paint is in the neighborhood of 10 lbs. I don't have specific data, but my gut tells me that somewhere between 10-20 lbs would do the job. I have 5lb steel weights that I could use in a scenario like this. If all I had was a 10lb can of paint, I'd likely add a little something on top.
 
Fwiw, I don't think (excessive) clamping pressure is needed to force the glue into the pores or create a good bond. In my mind, it's more to hold the pieces in place and to get equal pressure across the surface. At least, that's how it works in my head.
That's a good point about not needing weight in a press-fit plug. If it were me, I'd likely not make it super tight. I'd try to get it super close and put a screw in the middle as a handle so I could shape it and test fit it. For a plug like this, at the bottom of the cavity, the glue would fill any tiny gap.
For a plug coming up to the surface, I'd definitely want a really tight press fit.
I said I'd want,.... achieving is another story.

If it were me, I'd likely not make it super tight.
Well, I'm just starting out with this stuff and therefore suck, so I don't think getting it too tight will be an issue for me :D
My game plan was to try to find or make a template, do the best I can, glue it in, wood filler if theres a gap around the edges, then paint over when/if I refinish.

Wood filler is less because I think it's needed, and more so that I don't feel shame if anybody ever sees my workmanship later lol
 
Are you filling the entire cavity and redoing the whole thing, or just making a thin block to raise up the bottom because the cavity is a little too deep?
Ahhh sorry Samantha, don't want to overtake your build thread here. RichterScale - maybe PM me if you have any more advice here so I don't side track too much?
But I'm just putting a small block to raise everything up maybe 1/4" due to a routing too deep error. Its already a big swimming pool route and will stay that way so I can try out different pickups easily, but I went too deep and my p-bass pickups just barely poke out of the pickguard. I could probably pretty easily find longer screws and pop a thicker piece of foam under the pickups, but for the sake of learning and doing things right(ish), I think I'm better off adding a bit of wood.
 
Geeze feels like it's been three maybe four days since I've updated this thing! :woot:

Anyway progress is happening and the cogs are spinning freely.

After some quick head math a rheostat was ordered and fitted along with a few other bits.

Now I got this all neatly mounted and wired into my enclosure and as luck would have it, turns out quick head math isn't my forte. I can't quite remember what I did but it was a 20ohm where there should have been 200k sorta situation. :roflmao:

So than I thought why? Why a rheostat? Why not a simple MOSFET controller. (I'm realizing now I never took a picture of this) but anyway it was a better option as it gave me all the adjustment I need with both the main speed control and as well a fine adjust mounted internally. That and it was very cheap, sub $10 cheap.

With that I just had the loose ends to tie in order to make this thing work, bobbin guide and mounting of the box.

So with that stuff knocked out I wound a bobbin of thread and that worked! So I wound a real bobbin and that worked!!!

This did not go on hiccup free however. At 1k winds the counter slipped a gear and stopped counting, I kept going and while doing so fiddled with the reset lever and by holding it right I got it to continue counting. :roflmao: also because of the counter's mishap it put more than normal torque on the motor thus doing a great job of "breaking" it in lol.

Fwiw this coil (half of crisp cher's sidewinder) ended up almost equal winds per ohm +/- ~500 winds of error. Wound at around 1500rpm at it's fastest.

Anyway that's what I got for now.

I actually just knocked out a lot of work on this the last couple weeks and I've got more coming, just gotta find time to post these between life and life. More coils wound and eventual counter self destruct :D.

Earl is the younger prettier brother of Carl. They run a construction company just cross the way, over them tracks, and down that dirt road over there. Carl is getting a little old and being as his arthritis is pretty much a constant these days he mostly stays behind the seens while Earl ends up doing all the heavy lifting.

That enclosure is a recycled Hammond. I rivited those plates on there so I could reposition all the holes.

The drill walked on me :atoz:
I needed to drill larger to accommodate a dowl and re re drill but all I had was forstners in that size.

So I drilled the size I needed in some scrap and used that clamped over the hole to guide my bit.
Re re dowled and re re drilled.

I purchased a $25 dollar bigsby copy off eBay awhile ago. Than with the help of my friend Froggo and his $15 angle grinder we copped it short!

I really need to organize these. Anyway there's mostly cheap junk in these boxes that I keep because every once in awhile..

But now I'm realizing a cheapo strat pickup is pretty danm useful when you have a winder.

I had this really nice thank you card from someone who's signature I can't make out. :laugh:

Made a good paper bobbin double layered with some super glue that also helped to plasticize it. Also I didn't get a shot of it but I made a little rectangle with some plastic binding to form the center.

The holes for the poles were cut with a hole punch from my leather working tools. They were a pretty good friction fit but I super glued them as well because they would still move if pushed.

This was a good second wind as it only took about 6k winds and was a light bobbin with the poles out.

Somehow this bobbin wound beautifully:)

One thing that changed with this one was I had the cover off the winder and fiddled to get it to run smoother. I wish I could say what exactly I did but I don't really know now nor did I know than. :D

I remember thinking on that, and how it seems whenever that happens in my life it usually leads to something. :roflmao:
