Cruise ship gigging

Yaesu sticker. Ham?
Yes!

I am M1EYP and active most days from the ship as M1EYP/MM (the suffix stands for “maritime mobile” for the non-hams on Talkbass).

Captain Tanner gave me his written permission really enthusiastically and has actually encouraged me to operate up on public decks when possible as he feels our guests will find it interesting.

I’m mainly operating on 40m through 10m with a FT-817 and an Alexloop on the cabin balcony, using CW, SSB and FT8. Around 450 QSOs and 50 DXCCs worked so far.

A couple of new bass charts transcribed in the past few days, and uploaded to my website just now as we sail westwards through the English Channel. This takes us to 880 on the site.

Dancing Queen - Abba: I kept coming across bass parts for this that were nearly right but not quite right, and I found myself making the corrections "on the fly" while sight-reading on stage! Now I've said that, it's practically guaranteed that someone will find, and gleefully point out an error in my part ... oh well...!

Don't Know Why - Norah Jones: A very simple and easy bass part, but I was only given a chord chart for it, and wanted to get the feel spot on - hence the transcription!

Inevitably, more coming in due course from here on the MV Spirit of Adventure!

I got to play bass on a one week cruise from Boston to Bermuda. We were private from actual crew of ship. I backed up Doo Wop artists. We only played 3 or 4 shows for the promoter. Had a great time. Got to do it for 6 cruises, then I had to have lung transplant. Still out playing locally (cover material - 60's-70's Rock n Roll). You mentioned you have a website. I have not been able to find. Can you give name of sight. Great charts!

Yeah, no problem, the website is http://tomreadbass.co.uk

I've just uploaded 76 new charts to the website, taking it to over 900 bass transcriptions - all completely free to users of Talkbass.com

I'll go over and detail them in the notation section of the forum...

Hi Tom,
Congrats on landing the onboard gig. It sounds very fun.

I wish to thank you for your generous sharing of transcribed bass lines and encourage folks to buy Tom a beer or two (see his website). I discovered your website about 6 months ago and have directed other folks to it. At 60 years old, attempting to learn to read music. There may be other students who could use simple bass lines, so no bass transcription is too basic to post.
I anticipate visiting your site periodically as my skills improve to download transcriptions appropriate to my skill level (and of course, buy you a beer or two).

Cheers, Tom. And, thank you.

I've been a pro bass player for 35 years. In that time I've ticked off most of the gig types out there - tours, festivals, pubs, clubs, venues, recording studios, stadiums, theatres, radio, TV, gigging abroad etc. One always eluded me - the cruise ship.

Well, at the tender age of 51, I'm on one now - the brand new Saga Spirit of Adventure, on its maiden voyage.

It's gone pretty well so far. I'm in a decent band (with a great drummer - essential). The rigs provided on board are all Mark Bass (same as my own at home).

There is a nice German double bass on board for the occasional background jazz set in the restaurant, but most of the time I'm plodding away on my 1988 Fender Jazz.

I have a nice passenger cabin with a balcony (and to myself as well), and eatring great food in the on board restaurants three times a day.

It's a shame that it's not all that practical to get off the ship on port days, but one has to remember that the tight Covid protocols are keeping everyone safe, and moreover, keeping the gig going. Many of my fellow pros are still not yet working again.

There's no day off - it's a 7 day working week. Those days tend to have 4, 5 or even sometimes 6 sets to play, and sometimes with the first at 12 noon and the last finishing at midnight! In between those sets, I'm still writing bass transcriptions in my cabin. I've brought a small tablet running Musescore with me, and a Bluetooth QWERTY keyboard. I've had a couple of orders from my website, but mainly I've been writing myself bass charts I need for the shows on here.

So I have new bass transcriptions for you!

Two of these result from orders from my website where the customer has agreed to share the finished chart freely via the website in return for a 50% reduction in the price paid. The other two have been transcribed for the band sets on the cruise ship gig I'm currently working on.

The "headline" of these is undoubtedly the transcription of the full 8+ minutes of virtuoso double bassist Esperanza Spalding's "Cuerpo y Alma". This is a complete transcription - no repeats, signs or coda - every note, every variation, main groove, improvisations and the bass solo! It took me rather a long time to complete it, working on it between band sets on the ship, so I hope many of you bass players find some entertainment and enjoyment with it!

Anyone remember when the four original members of Kiss brought out solo albums? I was surprised to be asked to transcribe a track from one of those - "Hooked On Rock 'N' Roll" by Peter Criss. This is a really good rock bassline recorded by Bill Bodine.

The next one is a track we're doing on board, and one I was unfamiliar with! A disco anthem from Donna Summer - "Last Dance" - and legendary US session bass player Bob Glaub's great part.

Finally, the original John Paul Young version of "Love Is In The Air". I've no idea who the original bassist was on this!

(OK, quite an easy transcription that one, but plenty of work went into the other three!)

These four, and all the rest of the 878 bass transcriptions in standard notation, are completely free, and remain my gift to the fantastic Talkbass community!

Have a great day!

Thank you for these really kind comments - and for the beers too! I’m just back home this afternoon from a three-nighter that I charted a whole batch of stuff for (and which is all now on the site for everyone’s free use).
