CTS Solid Shaft Pots - Durability?

I took the knobs off my Jazz bass this afternoon to realign the position markers.

The bass has CTS solid shaft pots which the knobs are attached to via a hex screw.

Looking at the shafts, there was a little scratch mark / indentation of where the screw had been set. Will this affect the durability and / or strength of the shaft? The knobs all operate with no issues, turn smoothly and seem stable enough.

That's pretty normal for a knob held in place by a set screw or grub screw. As long as the screw wasn't over tightened and damaged the shaft somehow, which means more then just a mark where the screw was touching, the potentiometers are fine.

The pots will still be around long after you have joined the rock-n-roll heaven band.

Stan, this is a case where you don't have to worry, past 4 hours.

typical mark of a cup point set screw designed to bite into a material softer then itself. it's likely you will strip the socket, the threads, the allen wrench, and bust the knob before damaging that shaft badly with that set screw.

noticing that you seem to be in the UK, you would know presumably. fwiw, i'm adaptive and can go with whatever.

Not sure on the origin but it is more of a UK / European term. I saw the OP was in the UK and I thought that might be more familiar terminology.

That indentation in the shaft is why the knob doesn't come off or slip when turned. It's a good thing, and if you take your knobs off to clean up the bass, you can usually get the knob back on exactly where it was before removed….

Having been to the UK many times, I'll eat them either way, so long as they are not infested with small grubs.

I rebuilt my first Triumph 650 at 15. The hardest part was translating the factory manual. My personal favorite was gudgeon pin. I did learn how to reuse a copper head gasket so there was some educational value beyond semantical differences between us upstart colonists and our former overlords.
